I did a search and didn't come up with any instructions...

How do you rebarrel a Remington 700?

If someone could provide a link to a guide with some graphics? What tools does this require? Where do buy them?

Maybe someone can recommend a book i could buy?

Thanks for the help!

You would need an action vice, a barrel vice, gauges, reamers, a lathe with the necessary tooling... There are gunsmithing texts which describe the process in detail, and its not rocket science, but it isn't kitchen table gunsmithing. Lots of variables, depending on the state of the new barrel, what needs to be done to the action, etc., etc.

I agree with the post above....

..it isn't rocket science but you are going to have to spend a lot of money..... not a home project for most. I learned about barreling about six months into a two year course on gunsmithing... I then learned at lot more when worked full time as a gunsmith....

What the last 2 posts said AND by the time you spend the money just to buy the reamer, head space gages, counterbore cuuter, not to mention vise and action wrench, you have grossly exceeded the cost of having a professional do it for you.
The principle is easy, you remove the old barrel from the action, then cut threads on the shank of the barrel, cut the shank recess for the recoil lug, and cut the chamber. Then the barrel is swapped end for end in the lathe, and the barrel has the crown cut.
Once all the machine work is done the barrel can be reinstalled onto the action, I typically cut my chambers slightly short while in the lathe then finish them by hand once the action is on. Then you are ready to engrave or stamp the dta on the barrel and finish it, either blue,or whatever

6 months?:)..I'd lose interest in the project before that amount of time elapsed:D

The guys are of course correct.....not kitchen table gunsmithing to rebarrel your own 700...not even garage gunsmithing:)

what's a "counter bore cutter"?..and if it's what I think it is, why would you need one?

what's a "shank recess for the recoil lug"?
I don't think I've ever cut one. The recoil lug bore is usually the same size as the thread OD,..explain please.

That was very informative. Obviously much more work than I thought.

Is it possible to buy a barrel that is already threaded, chambered, and crowned. Then, buy the action vise, barrel wrench and gauge to swap finished barrels?

Such as swapping factory remington barrels?

Rembo Remingtons have a counterbored shank, the bolt protrudes inside the end of the barrel. ( the 3 ring of steel thing) This can be cut with a lathe bit, to be sure, but for production it is faster to use a cutter that cuts the counterbore to spec in 1 quick cut. Clymer and Manson both make piloted counterbore cutters, that are great. Quick and precise.

Remington factory barrels are not interchangeable. Headspace, sight index will have to be adjusted. You can buy threaded, chambered, crowned replacement barrels. They might or might not fit & gauge properly. It is possible to make barrel and action wrenches. The easiest factory rifle to rebarrel is the Savage. You can buy finished barrels which can be installed without cutting, because of the Savage locknut system. Still need some tools, and if sights are wanted on the barrel, they will have to be mounted after the barrel is on.

Thanks for all the help!

I was thinking of rebarrelling an older rem 700 .308.

I was also thinking of buying a new rem 700 SPS DM .243 and rebarrelling to .308. No sights to align, so i should be able to just ajust for headspace with the proper gauge, correct?

Thanks again guys
