I'd like to share this with my fellow CGN's. If there is another thread my apologies but I can't find it. I've had firearms, mainly mil surps, that would leach oil out of the wood grain especially on a hot day at the range. I looked on line and seen various attempts, mostly with solvents to remove this from the wood grain. but it's very messy and I deify you to find a small skinny container that you could completely submerse a full length nagant stock in varsol. Try submersing the wood in straight Murphy's Oil Soap. Here are the results I have had removing the creosote form a Carcano stock. It also works good on commercial guns where oil has soaked into the wrist. No harsh smell, can do it in the house and it washes off with water.

I used a dishwasher (not mine of course:rolleyes:). Three trips through the pot and pans cycle worked great!
