How to remove 'wood' from upper handguard?

I plan on doing some modifications on the upper handguard (and in fact eventually replace them with custom hardwood ones. To do this I need to remove the beaver barf wood from the metal part underneath. Anyone know how to do this?

Are you talking about the SKS? If so, you need a punch and a hammer (or a drill) to remove the retaining pin/rivet. Once that's out, separate the metal ferrule and the wood handguard will slide right off.

No he is on about the CZ 858. You have to bend the 2 metal tabs straight to remove it. be careful not to bend to much or repeatedly because you fatigue the metal and it could break.

Doesnt matter if they break. i have done it to all of mine and there is no wobble or any movment once it is in place.

Excatly what he said.
There are two metal flap's located on the underside that you squeeze together to get them to start rotating. Then with your other hand rotate the upper handguard the other way.
Actually it's funny to see a post like this after last friday me and another board member just did this and we turned his beaver barf set in to some nice hill billy handguards that work quite well. Maybe I'll ask him if I can post some pic's for ya guyz.

I'm hoping to mount a ruger 10/22 mount to the top handguard. I eventually plan to make a hardwood upper and lower handguard.
