how to rivet an M1 carbine mag?

I've seen these done several different ways. Some are done by riveting a blocking piece in place through the floor-plate. Others have the rivet through the back side of the mag (the flat side), which is my preference as you can still get the mag apart for cleaning.

X2 Rivet on the back side.

The follower has a pointy end on the "tail". I file that off so that there is a straight end to the "tail". Then I measured where the rivet had to go (on the back of the mag body). You can cold blue or paint the follower where you've ground off the pointy end to prevent it from rusting. The rivet is still below the mag housing and doesn't interfere with inserting the mag. :D

The latest imported M14 magazines have a big shark fin protrusion on the magazine follower. The body is not impaired. The spring is not impinged. And the follower rides naturally.
