How to shoot a handgun accurately By Massad Ayoob

Pretty sound for the basics. The grip issue is generally the only one that can be argued till the cows come home, and accurized and balanced target pistols only make it more complex. I prefer a tighter grip myself, largely because I have never had what I considered fantastic grip strength, but it can change depending on the duration of the session and calibre use too. If you are one of the lucky few with an iron mitt, you may benefit from a more relaxed hold.

It does not specifically address two-handed grips either, which IMO is the first technique the pistol shooter should master before venturing into one-handed grip shooting. Walk before you run so to speak. On this topic, the principles of isometric tension are part of the foundation of a solid shooting platform, and no "shooters checklist" would be complete without referencing them.

Thanks for the replys. I don't know too much about this guy, but I think he is into self defense and handgun shooting. I could be wrong though, but it might explain the one handed aspect of this article.

He is one of the gods of self-defence in the US ,and an expert witness at countless self-defense trials. He runs one of the top self -defense schools called the Lethal Force Institute (I assume that's still the name). His book In the Gravest Extreme should be mandatory reading for anyone conbsidering seld-defense.

Personal Defence TV

He has a piece on Personal Defence TV every week. The show is on Wild TV, I get it on Bell Wednesdays nights at 12:30 Atlantic.

I bought Ayoob's "Stressfire: Handgun" DVD and use the techniques he teaches. I like how he teaches weaver and isosceles and how you use which ever one works in the situation.

The thumbs down crush grip along with weak hand wedge hold feels less comfortable than the thumbs up or thumbs forward grip but do work very effectively.

Jarrett is a top IPSC/USPSA/STeel CHallenge/IDPA shooter. If I could afford it and had the time,..I would take a course from him. (or Ayoob; although I don't like his take on the thumb down grip for a semi auto)

Solid fundamental in the article. Getting some coaching or taking a course will have more effect or your shooting than emulating a short article.

2 schools of thought

Ayoob is teaching gunfight
Jarrett is teaching gungame

Both are valid techniques

But -

2 totally different disciplines requiring different and conflicting techniques

IPSC will get you killed in a gunfight
Any professional pistol carriers should avoid muscle memory from gun games

:nest:

LOL...whatever.

chopper do you know who jarrett is ??

he teaches LEO and Military much more then he teaches civilian classes....

Ayoob teaches self defense and CCW, jarrett teaches shooting and tactics... yes there is a big difference.

Jarrett would school Ayoob in either (any) shooting discipline,..however,..I would probably want Ayoob as my advisor if I ever had to go to court; because that is his thing.

I picked up a few tips from this video.

Don't listen to A WORLD CHAMPION! What does he know. LOL.
Paraphrasing - "Most people hold the pistol incorrectly because they make it COMFORTABLE, rather than in-line"... Exactly!

You sure about that?
