My f-i-l has a Marlin model 39. I've unscrewed the takedown screw, but it's reluctant to separate on it's own accord. Is there anything in particular I need to do to get it apart? #### it, lever half open, pull lengthwise, take apart like a sandwich, what?

I would recommend downloading the manual from marlin and follow the steps.
I do know that it takes a good whack to get it to break apart but I dont recall what condition the hammer should be in or if it even matters.

Seems to me the manual suggests folding a towel and putting it on the floor. I think the hammer should be cocked and a quick light rap to the fore end of the barrel on the left side should do it. Download the manual for sure cuz all the other stuff is there too. Nice little rifle-loads of fun to shoot.
