How to tell a model on a S&W revolver?

according to 'SCSW", smith did not start assigning model numbers until 1957 or thereabouts, so you gun is more than likely a ' named " model, built before that.

I have a 38 special S&W revolver. there is no model number on it. How can that be? I have had it for years and it was used when I got it. any experts out there?

Commonly referred to as "Pre-Model" most likely pre-model 10. . Most would be in the 5-screw models. . I have a few in 5-screw but also one in 4-screw. .

There is a set of numbers stamped on the frame at the bottom of the grip. Serial number. There is another set of numbers stamped in the frame under the cylinder pivot and on the piece tag holds the cylinder when it pivots out. Both these match. But they are several digits, so not a model number. Yet different from what is on the bottom of the frame. I will figure out how to post a picture.

Could be a pre war model too Model of 1905 it would have at least 6 numbers in the serial range and also have patent dates on the top of the barrel and Made in U.S.A. on the right side of the frame can really tell you without pictures..

The numbers on the bottom of the grip is the serial number the numbers in the crane or yolk are assembly numbers is there a serial number on the face of the cylinder if there is its pre 1957 if it has a single line address its pre WWII if this helps

Any pics always love to see the old Smittys

photobucket is pretty messed lately but here's a couple

pre-model 10 4-screw. the one on the right

The bottom revolver is a K-frame, pre-model, long action, serial begins with S

Here's a new one I bought in 1975-76 . . Still have it.

What prefix letter C or K in front of serial # Could be Model 10 or Model 14 Or Model 15 give us the Serial 123XX and we will tell you what you have..

The sights would tell you that.

If it has a fixed rear sight, it's a Model 10/Military & Police. If it has a click adjustable rear sight and Partridge front sight, it's a Model 14/Target Masterpiece. If it has a click adjustable rear sight and a Baughman Quick Draw front sight, it's a Model 15/Combat Masterpiece.
