How to tell: Browning s x s boxlock from sidelock

I gather the later guns are worth more than the early ones. Now for a gun in very good condition how much are we talking?

Depends on the gun more so where it was made than I believe how old. Below is a blurb from the net.

(The BSS was made from 71-88 in 12 and 20 guage. Barrel markings were originally (in order). "Made in Japan" followed by "Made in Japan and Assembled in Korea" and finally "Made in Koera from parts made in Japan")

Many buyers feel the Korean assembled or made guns are not quite of the same quality as the Japanese guns. To some it doesn't matter. You need to know if it's a boxlock, if so where was it made, or if it is a sidelock. Values will/can be different especially if it's a sidelock. Just ask the seller if it's a boxlock or sidelock and what it says on the barrels as to where made.

Thank you all, I have a pretty good idea what to look for. Time to see how much I will
shell out. Any ballpark figure on how much for boxlock or sidelock? Condition is very good to excellent.

Well, I'd be surprised if it is the sidelock as they were produced in limited numbers. The sidelock was recently talkled about on another forum and the price of around $4000.00 US was quoted, give or take. But the Canadian market is not as strong as the US market. You see 12 gauge boxlocks listed for anywhere from $800.00 to roughly $1500.00. Actual selling prices may be different.

IIRC The Browning BSS sidelock was only made for three years and in just two grades of finish. The linked article by James Flynn not only gives a good analysis of the sidelock but is sometimes credited with alerting the market in general as to what a nice gun the BSS sidelock is.

20's will always be worth more than 12's. In the last 4 years I have seen asking prices in Canadian dollars from a low of $4000 to well over $7000. Those are US guns. In Canada they show up infrequently. I had a chance to buy a 12 about 10 years ago for $2500. I passed but should have bought it.

The BSS boxlocks are much more common and significantly cheaper. A sturdy, well made boxlock for the money.

And iirc there was/is a BSS Side Lock in the ee right now.
Been there off and on for a few months and is right in between the numbers you mentioned.
Again, I might be off, but thats because I had to stand out in the rain at work today ;)
They are fine looking firearms.

Early BSS had a non-selective trigger, meaning they always fired the right barrel first. Later ones had selective trigger which is more desirable.
