How to tell if a Garand is a reweld?

I've done a search, and I can't find any info. I have a Garand with a funny stain on both sides of the receiver, but there are no grinding marks I would expect to see if the receiver were rewelded.

Anyone have some first-hand experience?

Thanks

If you can get hold of a copy of Kuhnhausen's book he describes the problem in detail. Usually front & rear will be from rifles of different mfr. Alignment problems, pits, cracks.

Alignment appears to be good, the receiver is all Springfield Armoury, as are most of the major cpmponents.

Are you referring to Kuhnhausen's shop manual "The U.S. .30 Caliber Carbines"?

tiriaq: I quoted the wrong book in my previous post; I should have caught that, I've been up all night.

Slash5: I hadn't seen that page before; very informative.

Thanks to you both!
