How to use Swaro Z3/Z5/Z6 rifle scopes for long range shooting.

The Swarovski Z3/Z5/Z6/Z6i rifle scopes are outstanding hunting scopes, however they fall a bit "short" for those looking to shoot "long range".

The design of the zero-stop limits the travel of the elevation turret to less than one full rotation. Taking a Z5 3.5-18x44 scope for example, engaging the zero-stop limits the elevation turret to a maximum of 53 clicks (a mere 13.25 MoA). In contrast, the Z5 3.5-18x44 has 15.5 MoA per revolution, with a total of 70.5 MoA of available adjustment. The Z5 5-25x52 model has 49.75 MoA of available adjustment.

Removal of the zero-stop is actually very simple, does not require a degree in mechanical engineering, exotic tools (a paper clip will suffice), can be done quite quickly, does not permanently modify the scope, and can be reversed in a matter of minutes, to reinstall the zero-stop and return the scope to factory spec.

Implementing a rail with forward declination or properly installed shims under the rear mount, will make this adjustment useable, thereby greatly increasing the range of these rifle scopes. By limiting the down-travel it is easy to recognize where the rifle is zeroed - the shooter cannot go a full rotation below their designated zero.

Swarovski produces MoA (for the Z3/Z5) and Mil (for the Z6/Z6i) turret caps - easily ordered from any Swarovski dealer.

Here's a quick video showing how to remove, and reinstall the zero-stop. I've been asked about this many times and finally got around to making a video and posting this info. Hopefully existing owners of these scopes can utilize their full potential, and those who have considered them for longer range work, but eliminated them due to an apparent lack of adjustment, might reconsider them.

Of course, Swarovski will be releasing the new X5 and X5i long range scopes this fall, at almost double the price of the existing Z5 3.5-18x44 and Z5 5-25x52.

Feel free to PM or post with any questions.

Ive been trying to decide on a new scope for my Tikka T3 lite in 7mm and its come down between Swarovski and Zeiss.. Im leaning more towards the Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15X42 Z800..

What are your thoughts?

If you are leaning towards the Zeiss because of the Rapid-Z reticle, then it is difficult to find a substitute for that system. The Rapid-Z calculator is easy to use, accurate, and the fact that the Rapid-Z reticles are numerically indexed makes implementation in the field relatively easy. The Swaro BRH/BRX reticles are backed by the very easy to use, flexible, and accurate Swarovski Ballistic Calculator, however the reticles are not numerically indexed, and thus, can be harder to use in the moment (i.e. knowing which line to grab). I can tell you from personal experience that a Tikka T3 7mm with a Rapid-Z 800 reticle can yield deadly accurate results right out to 800 yards, as per the reticle.

Optically however, the Swarovski Z3/Z5 noticeably superior to the HD5's. In-store customers comparing the HD5's to the Z3/Z5's unanimously comment on how much brighter and clearer the Swarovski scopes are. Likewise, the fit and finish of the Swaro is more refined, and they are noticeably lighter than the Zeiss HD5's.

Price wise, with the recent increases to the Zeiss HD5's, they are comparable (quoting MAP prices):

Zeiss HD5 2-10x42 RZ600 - $1199
Swaro Z3 3-10x42 BRH/BRX - $1079
Zeiss HD5 3-15x42 RZ800 - $1399
Swaro Z3 4-12x50 BRH/BRX - $1199
Swaro Z3 4-12x50 Ballistic Turret - $1289
Zeiss HD5 5-25x50 RZ800 - $1499
Swaro Z5 3.5-18x44 BRH/BRX - $1829
Swaro Z5 5-25x52 BRH/BRX - $2029

As you can see, the Swaro Z3 compare directly with the HD5 price-wise. It is then a noticeable jump to the Swaro Z5.

I have all of the above listed scopes (and many more) in stock. Feel free to PM, call (1-250-747-4636) or email (precisionoptics@hotmail.com) with any questions. I often have dealer samples and demos available as well.

Cheers,

Omer

I had a Zeiss Conquest on my Model 70 Extreme and it basically internally fell apart. Sent it to for repair and waited for 6 months, they sent it back "fixed" and mounted it back on my Winchester and after 3 shots...same thing, all internal rattled loose. Sent ti back and they wanted to replace it with a crappy Terra model. After a month of fighting I finally got a comparable replacement in an HD5 and sold it. Zeiss customer service really blows..I will never buy another and wouldn't recommend one on my worst enemy.
That being said my Model 70 now wears a Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44.....amazing glass.

Cheers!!

Go to a store that carries both Zeiss and Swarowski and compare them side by side. I was amazed by how much better Swarowski glass was (especially on the Z5). Not that HD5 is bad by any means, but Swarovski takes it to another level.

I am very appreciative of the selection of quality optics that Omer makes available to us in our little town (and elsewhere of course)! He's just a genuinely nice and helpful guy.

PS - My avatar picture is the finished bolt handle of my CZ varmint rig: after hours of careful profiling, sanding, and polishing the Z5 now fits beautifully!

What is the cost of the mil turrets for a z6? Will this cause excessive wear on my scope as it did not come with these turrets installed from factory?
Gd7- could you put up a few more pics of the work you did on the bolt handle, I may have to do the same to fit my z6 onto my sako

The mil turret is around $169 +tax/shipping. I say around due to the influence of the CDN/US exchange rate on US sourced items.

No, this will not cause any more wear than the standard ballistic turret it does.
