I did a search online and couldn't find anything that explained how to use the tangent rear sight on my Kar98. Instead of being ignorant and trying to figure it out at the range, I thought I would post here.

Here is my guess to how to use it, feel free to correct me. With the sight not adjusted (i.e. flat and level with the Kar98) you would position yourself and the rifle properly so as to put the front sight right in the "V" slot of the rear sight. When you adjust for range (i.e. 500m lets say) and adjust the rear sight accordingly, the rear sight raises up. Do you now, with yourself properly positioned as before with the rifle, have to tilt (muzzle end up, butt stock end down) the rifle until you are able to see the front sight in the rear sight again just as if it were non-adjusted and level ?

Thank you for your help.

You got it right. I can vouch for it being awkward to hold a rifle with the tangent sights set as the more "wishful" ranges. Try putting the sights on a No.1 enfield at the maximum range and holding it in such a way that the sights line up and it wont put the upper corner of the butt into your shoulder.

Great, thanks for confirming what I thought about the rear sight. Hope this thread helps others who aren't quite sure about that rear sight.

The longer ranges (1000m and more) were used for voley fire where many riflemen would fire at the same target in the hope of hitting something. The more rifles, the more effective the voley was... Mainly used against guns, troup concentrations, cavalry, etc...

This video gives you an idea of the parabolic trajectory you're dealing with at longer ranges. This is a 50 cal tracer at 1000 yards. If you could see the arc of your K98 at 500 yards it would appear similiar, which is why the front of the rifle is "raised" to line up with the rear and it feels so awkward.

Move forward to about the 1:30 mark for the tracer shots.
