how to work the Sights

was look at my SKS and saw that you can move the sights from 1 to 10. How does it work?

number on the plank is the hundred meters 1- is 100 2 is 200 etc. The very first position (the one before 1) is "battle" position and equals to 300 meters.
If you set it to that mark, and shooting a target which is 1.5 meter tall at distance 100 or 200, then aim right where the target is touching the ground.
Otherwise make sure to adjust your sights accordingly to the distance.

I was shooting at a target that was 50 yards away and could not hit it. When I aimed way below it, that worked. I'm a very good shot with rifles so was completely baffled. I'm wondering if I should have started with 100 yards? Still baffled. The front sight was at "1".
