Unfortunately, the few times I went out I saw very few ruffed grouse, in areas which have had abundant numbers in past. This was around the Belair/Pine Falls area. I saw a few more sharptails this year SE of Lake Manitoba, but still not lots.

How were the other areas around Manitoba for bird numbers?

I had 4 for the freezer, how's the grouse hunting in the snow? I've never tried it and was thinking of heading out again maybe this week end.

Grouse hunting in the snow is one of my favourite things. But deep snow or hard crust makes it horrible. It's so much fun to walk a trail until you see fresh chicken tracks cross it, and then follow to see what happens!

I was also in the Belair area two weeks ago. I walk for 5 hours without seeing a bird. I did see a lot of snowy owls, which might explain the low population of birds.

I hunted the northern tip of Agassiz Provincial forest ajacent to Hwy 317. I had not hunted there for about 15 years, used to be great back then. Never saw a bird but did hear one.

Usually I go to the Sandilands near Woodridge but the last 2 years for me it has been pretty spotty but would have a least 3-4 decent chances per day.

Anyone hit a hotspot in southern Man. this year ? Anyone try up around Nopiming ?

Tim.

I was up in Nopiming in June working with the airforce and the Ruffs were thick up there. Couldn't go 100m down a road without them jumping out in front of the truck. The ticks were also the worst I'd ever seen and the flooding got pretty bad later in the summer.
