hi guys, i have been offered a Howa 1500 in .223 for a swap .. curious if they are worthwhile for getting into precision shooting.

its the model with the pepper laminate thumbhole stock and heavy bbl

just after quick answer really. but debate if you wish :)

Howa 1500 is a good action, with recoil lug build in to the action, also sako extractor consider by many other to be more reliable...

Howa makes good rifles. A heavy barreled 1500 .223, depending on the rifling twist, sights and the trigger, would be OK. It's really a varmint hunting rifle. Dingoes and 'roos(I think) to you. Good ammo is essential. That means match grade bullets.

HOWA = Wby Vanguard.

A very nice action. Lots of accessories available including triggers and stocks. Was quite surprised but I guess this action has been around for quite a while.

55gr Amax and go all the way out to 1200yds - Really, the bullet will make the trip.

Rebarrel to whatever floats your boat. Me, I like the heavies 75 to 90gr VLD's.

Lots of LR ballistics and adequate for mid size grass eaters.

Enjoy...

Action is just as good as a remington..

wrong.......it's better than a 700 in a couple of ways...it has a flat bottom receiver with an integral recoil lug,an integral bolt handle and an M-16 style extractor, with a trigger swap they are as good as any 700. Some Howas have triggers that adjust quite nicely,..others not so..
When Howa designed the action back about 1970 they copied a lot from the Sako L61R.....the stocks are almost a direct swap between a long action Howa and a Sako L61R, the bottom metal inletting is a bit different though,and the way the firing pin assembly is installed in the bolt is pure Sako.

I find that you can adjusted the trigger better than the new Remington trigger.
got to take it apart and play with it.

1 in 12 is good for anything up to 55grain, but for long range 1 in 9 or 1 in 8 would be better for the heavy bullet like the 75, 77 or 80 BTHP from Sierra. there is no such thing is a magic twist that are good for everything...

I have a heavy barreled Howa 1500 in .223. It has been my main varmint rifle for many years. It will shoot consistently under an inch at 100 yds with good handloads. It won't shoot anything over 60 grs. accurately but under that weight is great. As suggested, you could rebarrel with a faster twist but it would depend on what you want it for.
