Hi Guys, how are the numbers of birds (ruffled grouse) in your area this year? For me they seem low/non existent same as the last couple years in the areas I frequent (southeast Manitoba) I remember years back those dumb birds were everywhere....maybe I need a new area?

Had a half dozen flushes yesterday but only managed to bag one. Rusty to say the least. They do have a population cycle and can has slow years, aswell as a forest matures it is less favourable to a grouse. She explains it pretty good IMO

Not seeing as many as usual in the regular spots here around the 'Loops, although I was mostly looking for deer with my girls, so maybe there were lots I wasn't seeing. Going out tomorrow to see if we can find a few.

Tonight we are eating the last package of grouse from last year. Harvested Sept 13, 2015.

we seem to get quite a few that come into the yard and see them along the way to the forest, but in the past, haven't seen many of these kind in the forest, not sure why. I haven't been in the forest lately, so not sure what's in there. Too many leaves still on to see a lot.
We don't hunt them anymore as there is only one guy here than likes them.

Was up at our farm with the wife this past weekend for her first grouse hunt - we had three in about an hour and we're sure there's many more we did not see while trying to slip quietly through the woods:

We roasted them with bacon, salt, pepper and thyme, then made a mushroom cream sauce and mashed potatoes. It was the best meal I've had all year!

Cheers,

Brobee

Ive gotten 6 ruffed on 3 (leisurely) outings so far this year.
I find the spruce population is low this year, in the area I hunt. Many more Ruffed than the last couple of years.

Nice. Wife looks pretty happy ( congrats ) but then again who isn't when they shoot a couple of grouse for supper.

Dinner looks great will definetly have to try it if i get lucky enough to bag a couple.of grouse this season. How long did you bake them for and at what temperature?

Still looks really green out there but I guess the dog helps. When I go out I'm the dog lol.

There should be a wild game recipe section on this site.

There's a sticky in the hunting forum... I did this one last weekend: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/80652/northern-ontario-partridge-ruffed-grouse/ was quite tasty, made up some mashed potatoes for the gravy.

Edit: Sorry, not a sticky, a sub-forum. Right up at the top, under the sponsors.

I usually breast it then dip it in cajun fish crisp deep fried. Simple but delicious. Choice of side rice potatoes or salad.

I go grouse hunting which is my favorite ( nothing like hiking the logging trails in the fall) in the northbay area. Have not seen many the last few years.
