Hi guys heading to Manitoba for a whitetail deer hunt in the whiteshell provincial park near Rennie and the surrounding area farmlands.
Hows the deer population there? Also any tips or advise about hunting in the whitshell park? On google earth i see lots of powerlines that someone can
access for hunting with some areas for posting and good long views, any body have any luck there hunting powerlines? Also hows the area for older mature bucks?

Thanks

I been reading on other forum's and groups that the deer population is way down due to a tough winter a few years ago, then the wolves moved in and desimated what was left. And is said to be poor hunting.

A lot of areas are closed to hunting in the Whitedhell. I've never gone hunting there because the cottagers are too much of a hassle.

The deer population in many areas of the SE has been hit hard, and my trail cameras seem to echo that.
Harsh winters, predation (wolf/coyote population up), and increasingly easy access for hunters to back woods / refuge areas has taken its toll.
There are certainly deer out there, even good numbers in some pockets, but overall the percentage of mature bucks is a tiny fraction of what it was only a few years back.

I think the introduction by the province of the limit of "one buck (antlered) per year" was a positive move, similar to back in the late '90's, and it works to protect the does and yearlings to bring up the numbers.
The flip side is that in the say, 5 years or so that it takes to rebuild the population...the older bucks either die from hunting, starvation, or predation, and this only leaves younger bucks surviving during this time.
It takes an additional few years after the population has recovered to start producing large, mature whitetail bucks.

Also, make sure you are clear on your boundaries between private and crown land in that area, as you noted there are many farmlands present.

Well seems like I might of made a bad choice in the area of Manitoba that I picked to hunt due to the bad winters a few years back, but same thing happened to me in sask when they had there population devastated by a few really bad winters, but thats hunting take the good with the bad. Even during the bad winters in sask we did see some bruisers during the time we were there. So as it stands I will be hunting the area of whiteshell and hope i find some decent pockets and maybe see a bruiser also. The first few days will be feet on the ground looking for any areas that hold deer and see what happens if nothing then I will drive west and see some dif parts of Manitoba.
Thanks for the heads up guys.
Elmer
