So I got this Pattern 14 that came with a Target Stock etc, .308 27" Shillen HBAR, but I wanted to give it a classic non modern look to it. But still compete with the modern day rifles ( Rem 700 PSS, Savage LE2B Etc )

I bought a Old P14 Sporter stock, I had to enlarge the barrel channel for the HBAR, Then the trigger area for the aftermarket trigger, I refinished it and drilled it for a No4T wooden sniper cheek piece on order.

I want to put a older style scope on it to give it that retro look to it. I was thinking a Weaver K4 Style scope, but something higher power then 4X, Maybe 6-9X. Any ideas?

But here it is so far...

I need to mount the butt plate on it and the recoil tie.

Might have the barrel shorten to 24"

Looks great - I agree with shortening the barrel as the sporter wood is a little short (unless you can get another sporter stock with longer wood). Have you tried Ebay for weaver scopes? (I know Ebay sucks but they have a ton of retro scopes for sale there). An old Unertyl would look great on it as well but those are big dollars.

I would try and make it a sleeper. Put on a FULL orig stock. Hollow out the handguard and forend for the pipe to float in. All the orig hardware. Turn down the part that sticks out and put on the front sight. Keep it looking orig outside the wood.

I would put on a cloth/strap on check rest like the Springfield and M1A's used.

For a scope, here I think you have a nice scope there now. I wouldn't go out school unless I can find a Unertl, Balvar type externally adj scope rings and long scope tube. I think Redfield may have made some too????

I think 10 or 12X is also possible. The Balvars had very good optics for the period and the adjustable rings work really well. This will require some cutting and drilling to mount on the barrel but it would look more 'scale'.

Then go shoot 1/2 min at 300yds and make shooters scratch their head.

Fun project...

With the barrel size, I don't think The original Milsurp wood would be wide enough to hollow out and still be shooting safe. If it was possible, I run the huge risk of weakening the wood and cracking it. I know when I had a Milsurp P14 there wasn't much wood to play with...

Thing is the rifle already shoots 3/4" and less groups. I got 2 other 308 HBAR Rifles that shoot the same, But I just want to have this rifle that someone will scoff at me to tell me to get a Rem 700...

I have had some very heavy barrels in the orig stock. The handguard is the same width so it would work. If it gets thin, a layer of 6oz fibreglass resolves any cracking issues. It would be alot of sanding though :)

If the sleeper look doesn't turn your crank, you can always use the stock you have now to build an A5 or M40 style of stock. A few slabs of wood shaped would give you any stock style you want.

Or whatever you can dream up...

If I had that barrel on a 700 and it only shot 3/4 inch I would be trying to figure out what's wrong... :D

... and it should do better on that action too...

Mysticplayer...

you pretty much described what I wanted to do with my p-14 at one time.... only I was going to chamber it for .330 Dakota!!
Now I'm thinking .366 DGW, with a A-square stock.
