Anyone ever heard or practices physical conditioning to increase your shooting stamina?
Seems to me the boys with the top averages just bang targets till one gets tired enough to miss one.
I know it affects me. I find it harder to concentrate after 125 targets or so. Then I make mistakes. Just wondering is so cardio or strength training would help?

Strength and conditioning will definitely help! Bender had an article in Skeet Shooting Review earlier this summer that dealt with just this issue.

Strength and conditioning are always mentioned in books and such. Daro Handy, Frank Little and shooting sports psycologist Micheal Keys all talk about strength physical fitness to varying degrees.

However, it does seem that quite often the overweight or pack a day smoker or even the guy whose age is beyond senior is winning a lot of buckles at trap shooting events. Further those guys always have the best tips to help out your game.

There is no doubt that we may not run with the 'most fit' crowd. But if you are looking to give yourself some minor advantages, there is a lot to be said for physical fitness.

For your average skeet tournament, you shoot at about 500 birds and are on the field for about 7 hours. The weather is not always ideal for this. If you are fit, and you are into the 4th box in 100 degree heat with a high humidex, you can worry more about breaking the birds rather than wondering if you'll be able to drag your ass to the next station.

When you are lifting your gun that many times on a weekend, muscle fatigue can play a factor. Spend a little time on the weights and you can help overcome this.

Will being fit turn you into a AAA or 27 yard shooter? Probably not, but it may help you move up a class, or give you a few extra birds when the conditions get tough.

Brad.

And I think most important is heart rate. If you're fit, or have a good heart, your beats/min are lower and you can get a better shot off between beats. You only have a second or so in flight, so the steadier the shooting platform the better. Works for all shooting sport, actually.
