HS precision stock = hollow butt?

Looks like I am going to want an adjustable cheek rest. I was considering more of a pad but I think a solid rest will let me get a more solid cheek weld without the concern of more or less pressure putting my head in a different position.

Normally, the idea of drilling into the rifle stock would scare the crap out of me (out of fear of screwing it up). after fiddling with my rifle and tapping the butt with my nails, I believe the butt is hollow. If it is hollow, then it is just a matter of putting 4 holes in it (2 on each side) that I can get as close to lining up as possible and I am done. Much less intimidating then trying to drill thru a solid buttstock, out the other side and it needing to be straight, or trying to drill a hole from both sides to join up in the middle somewhere.

Is anyone able to confirm that the HS precision stock used on the remington 5R does have a hollow stock?

If you drill your stock, yer #### will fall off!

Sorry I could not resist! LOL :D

Seriously, a jig and drill press would be mighty helpful. Don't do what I did! (handheld drill) Thank goodness for JB Weld / Bondo! :D

I've added a cheek weld to a stock like that and it was very easy, and yes it was hollow like you describe. I did it like you said measure both sides then drill to match, nice and easy works perfectly.

I'm pretty sure your correct. My 5R sounds hollow in the butt area.

I think drilling a solid piece is easier than hollow. The drill bit has something to follow all the way through. You have an increased risk of mis-alignment when drilling tube like structures.

As was already stated...Drill press and a jig!!!!

see, I was thinking, put the cheek rest on. Mark the hole location on both sides of the butt (do not try to go in one side, and out the other). Drill the right hand side holes from the right, then drill the left hand side holes from the left side. As long as the hole locations were marked appropriately you should be golden.

IF the stock is hollow, then the angles are not as crucial. I could be off 45 degrees and it would be an easy fix as all it would do would be making the cross section of the whole too small.

This walkthru at sniper central makes it sound ridiculously easy on a hollow butt stock.
