I bet the price at our "LGS" was scary for that. $80 a box? LOL

50 bux. Bill doesnt own outdoor essentials anymore. some newfie gunsmith bought it. he is gonna be bringing in restricteds ect and have it all on display not hid away in the back room. was talkin to him today.

Interesting. Is he still planning on catering to the fashionable urban soccer mom needing the latest North Face gear too? Or turning it into an actual gun store?

To your OP, I shot some of those in 45/70 recently. They were as good as stout hand loads. Pretty decent for store-bought ammo.

I think its gonna be both, but they said the guns will be coming outside not in the back room, there will be a display of sorts, they will be bringing in restricted and seeing as the new owner is a gunsmith, im guessing they will offer gunsmithing too. The store looks bare now as they are just getting started. He has got to be better then Bill.

Well, I'm looking forward to it. I like Bill (and his son/daughter) well enough, and have known them for a number of years, but his/their approach to retailing firearms/ammo/accessories left more than a little something to be desired. I haven't shopped there in a long while.

As to the HSM Bear Load ammo, the product number you listed is their "standard line" 44Mag 300gr ammo.

The "Bear Load" is a 305gr "Wide, flat-nose" gas checked bullet at 10 FPS faster. They're both very similar, at least according to Hunting Shack's website.

Ya the boxes I got have bear load written on them as well, the wide flat nose is more popular from what ive read.

I am shooting the 430 gr HSM bear load in my Marlin SBL 45/70 and they are very STOUT compared to the factory 405 Remmys!
I think there great!

Remington factory 405gr loads are safe in rolling-block actions; they are very, very mild compared to what modern actions can handle.

I sometimes carry a Rossi Ranch Hand or Marine Magnum (and bear spray) when I'm working alone here on the ranch, or fishing the rivers nearby. Does anybody know if those .44 cartridges would be too stout for that Rossi lever-action? I seem to remember that that action is also chambered for the .454 Casull, so I'm guessing that it would be OK for these bruisers.

I wouldn't shoot them a lot, obviously ... save them for the woods, and just use store-bought stuff for dickin' around ...

I had the Wanstall's gunsmith do the Steve's Guns tune-up on the Ranch Hand when I first bought it, so I'm guessing that there would be no feeding issues. And finally, does anybody know if these cartridges can be purchased in the Crowsnest Pass - Pincher Creek - Lethbridge area?

Thanks!

The stuff I got is no longer listed on their website, they do have a 305g version, but the lead is not truncated its flat. I found this locally and im gonna go back to see if they can get more. If so ill buy some more up. I will be shooting a box when I get the paperwork for my redhawk as I have to see how they feel and perform. Check out their website and you can google for pics, but they make the bear loads in a bunch of different calibers.

Just called the local store, they don't know if they will be getting more or not. I may check with Irunguns later on to see if they can bring some in.

Ammosupply.ca lists these. Kate is excellent to deal with.

Thanks ... I noticed that earlier today. I've already asked an acquaintance in Calgary to pick me up a box.

Knowing my luck, they'll be sold-out by the time he gets his ass in gear. :)
