Hand rifled longrifle barrel

Hand cut longrifle barrel with 6 oval grooves .025" deep. The bore is a tapered 50 cal. with a slight choke at the muzzle. It takes a .490 round ball , a .025 denim patch lubed with bear tallow and 80 gr. of ffg black powder. With this load and using a wooden proofing jig, the accompanying target was shot at 100 yards. The group measures 3/4 of an inch. The outside dimensions are 42" long, straight octogan and 15/16" across flats. The breech is threaded with 3/4 x 16 x 3/4" deep. Thils barrel is a real bargain at the listed price, considering it is handcrafted and will produce a 3/4" group at 100 yards.

Toenjes Barrel

Hugh made some handsome rifles with his own barrels and others.

He is no longer resident in Canada, having relocated to the US following the death of his father and the settlement of his estate.

Having known him well for several years and been on many hunting trips with him, in the end, it turns out no one really knew the man. I won't disparage the man on a public forum in his absence, but some of his actions prior to leaving Canada left many of us bewildered.

If anyone is interested in details, they can contact me personally or by private message. He left a few people high and dry and you may be one.

From what I hear he's a character, disappeared for a while as I understand it.
Sure makes a helluva barrel, didn't know he made rifles. This barrel is is one of his cheaper ones.

I currently have two of Hugh's barrels, one on a gun and one yet to be made into a gun plus had a third on a gun which I traded to Rob from Hudson. No complaints with them although my eyes are not up to shooting the sort of groups pictured. Back around 1980 Hugh made some very fine looking rifles on a custom basis. I think he may be doing some restoration work now but not sure. I liked the very deep rifling that Hugh cuts.

Hugh's barrels

Hugh has a thing for deep cut rifling. He regarded the depth of rifling in several of my rifles as 'smoothbore'.

He has more than just 'disappeared' for a while - he divorced and relocated to the US; North Dakota, last I heard.
