I am wondering if I need to put silica gel packs in my gun locker to help prevent rust/condensation or this goldenrod dehumidifier ive read about. what do you guys use, if anything?

Thanks,

Shane

I put silica packs in mine last year....they were all used up in under a week. I pretty much gave up at that point. I'm going to try a cordless unit this year.

i found a dollar store solution

Beware dollar store solutions. I used to put DriZair in my cabinets ( a long time ago now ) if there are crystals which remove the moisture and turn it into liquid , the Liquid that forms is often a highly concentrated salt brine solution. I removed one gun( Packing during a divorce) and was rewarded with about 60 hours or rust removal and re blueing 3 guns when the DriZair tipped and splashed 3 other guns in the cabinet . I use an electric Store dry heater which plugs in and is pretty much a 100 W element in a can with holes. This keeps the Air warm dry and circulating nicely . We live in a ocean beachfront house and have a very humid salt air environment, I also keep most of my guns in gun socks which seem to help a little too.

I've got a thousand lb steel gun safe. My hardware is sitting freely inside. I use a corded dehumidifier rod. Have had it for 10 yrs with no rust. :)
Made the costly mistake once storing a gun in a "non-firearm" safe. The dehumidifier is a small price to pay to keep your guns rust-free.

thanks guys. I am thinking i may try a combination of

That way i hope i have ok protection with silica and a dehumidifier while keeping it cord free. what do you think?

Those are really the same. Cordless dehumidifiers are just silica gel with a heater that dries them out when plugged in.
