I find huns frustrating at best,at times they will hold and are quite approachable and other times flush at 100 yards over and over again.

When it's very cold but sunny they may settle down for the night on pavement that absorbed the sun's heat during the day. I got my first Huns (a pair) late one night with an old Chev pick up. (I also got a duck with that truck. Wish I hadn't sold it.)

Huns don't like wind. On a very windy day, after or before feeding time, ( 9AM - 4PM ) you will almost always find them in the lee of a grove of trees.

Hunting Partridge in big country on the prairies with a big running pointing dog is the closest thing to hunting perfection.

The main thing with Huns is don’t flock shoot, pick a bird and stay with it. You have more time than you think. When it drops move on to the next one. In no time you will be shooting triples .

Lots of Huns this year where I work combining. The odd time, there would be two different flocks in the same field. I have shot a few in my time, but the one thing I usually fail at is being ready. That's okay. I am not wanting to make a pig of myself.

I did get a couple with my Dad's old Tobin this Fall, as well as one Prairie Chicken, down around Willow Bunch. I went down there to hunt with a Metis friend. We had a great time, and he is of the same mind as me, just take a couple of birds and be satisfied.

Could be part of the difference, although we don't have too many Americans around here that hunted Huns, mostly geese. Good to see lots of birds, at any rate. Merry Christmas!

Most likely Hun friendly weather when it mattered. I don’t think they face enough pressure for hunting to reduce numbers that much. Consider yourself lucky. Peak Partridge is a good time to be alive.

1980 Chev half-ton. These two hit above the grill and above the windshield and went over the top. I stopped to look for them and could only find one. Gave up and tossed it in the bed, I had to get to work ... when I got there I looked in the bed, there were two. The missing one had landed in the bed. What a truck.

The duck hit the headlight surround. I had to readjust the aim of the headlight. Slightly. About a week before my brother was on the same dirt road in a '96 GMC and a duck took out his grill, which cost several hundred dollars to replace with a secondhand one and labour for cash. (His duck was beyond salvage but I braised the breasts of mine and made a plum sauce for it.)
