It's official! The Shooting Edge has kindly opened their classroom facility for me to carry out TWO (don't buy one, buy TWO of them philosophy) M14 Clinics at their business location. In the past Savage (a very kind and busy CGNutter) has been my pointman. Since I'm also visiting some Calgary buddy(ies), I've got wheels and a place to stay for a week. So this time, he's got a break from my stale jokes.

This summer, I need to clear my head and spend more time out west because this Univ of Alberta boy misses the west, being stuck here in Bantario. Boy am I ever happy to return out west to spread the M14 LOVE ! Except this time I will be around for TWO clinics and also shoot some gophers! :D

* Date: Sat & Sun 24/25 July 2010
* Location: TSE The Shooting Edge, Calgary

* Cost: $ 35
* Timings: 0900 start - Likely finish up around 1600 hrs

Material Covered:

- Tools for tweaking, tools to avoid, tools that are nice to have but expensive, tools that are overrated and too expensive
- Gadgets that are nice to have, need to have, and useless to have (but I had to buy it to show you)
- Tools that you can make yourself instead of buying, tools that you can have buddies (owe you favors) make up for you
- Stripping the boomstick (you will be surprised at what I can show you)
- Assembling the boomstick, and what to look for so that worthwhile tweaks can be or should be made
- Tweaks that work, tweaks that don't work, expensive tweaks so yer #### does not fall off
- Useless tweaks unless you have more money than shooting ability (many stories to follow at the clinic)
- Common pitfalls, expensive tweaks that work, more ways to ensure that yer #### don't fall off
- Lunch and then tweaking in the afternoon, shimming, pounding out more shims (all hands on activities)
- Lots of networking and socializing all the time. This is priceless (even if the $ 35 only covers my costs).

* Things to bring: your M14, some basic tools, notebook, pens, digital camera, rags, ball peen hammer, punches, screwdrivers, more punches, TIG Welder, Service Truck (vise for rebarreling), fired brass for us to measure, plastic or rubber mallet, wood block or 2, Black and Decker Workmate (clamping ability for your barreled action or stock), masking tape, duct tape, Loctite (blue and red stuff), I'll bring the Devcon and all glass bedding materials....more to follow as I remember to remind myself.

* Registration: PM (don't use email) me on the board. I'll send you payment instructions. You can choose EMT (electronic money transfer for you online banking fans) or Snail Mail cheques/buried cash. We'll just stick with the fee ! I will use this forum (right here ) to monitor the numbers and payment details. With your payment, ensure that you remind me of your CGN handle and what location the clinic is in since I'm helping run several Service Rifle and Service CQB these days.

* I have to cap each clinic at 20 bodies because of some (rightly so) concerns about overcrowding in the classroom from June 2009... Hence the chance to run TWO clinics! Alberta has ALWAYS been sending me PM's to run clinics, so I gotta get off my butt and be there! :)

Hey Hungry, if you need or want me to come out with all the tools to give a hand..... just say the word my friend ;)
I don't want to take up a valuable spot though

What's with all these M14 clinics?

Is it really that complex of a platform that it requires a course on how to maintain and tweak it? Or are people just bored and looking for ways to kill time?

I haven't seen "clinics" on any other rifle besides the m14 on this site. It's not like the AR-15 isn't just as popular (if not more).

No its not that complex of a platform its just a good way to get together an swap stories ,meet new people ,check out each others boom sticks ,an generally have a good time playin with the toys an BSin

If they were real M14's, no clinics would be needed, but these are nice barrelled receivers with some possibly questionable parts, poorly assembled, made in China, for the $500 and less price point. Some needed tweaking should be expected.

With a few reasonable tweaks and a barrel vise to properly index your tube, the rifles can be made as close to a real M14 as anyone has (apart from the 12(x) guys who own the real thing but can't shoot them!)

Funny you should mention that.... It was all because we had a pile (I mean big shztload) of Israeli Surplus M14's back in 1986, we got an NRA High Power team put together at Sharon Gun Club and my coach began the M14 clinics (ONE of them) so that we can tweak the loose and rattling USGI M14's. My first ever was a TRW and it jingled like a Christmas ornament. The headspace was mic'ed to 15 thou  and the gas cylinder needed 3 shims, that's how loose it was. The flash suppressors had to be opened up to NM spec of 0.406" with a # 7 tapered pin reamer, you know, the one I show you at my clinics!

The reason we have the M14 clinics is BECAUSE WE CAN! It's the perfect opportunity to build community, network with people, share  good and bad :( stories about our boomsticks and then tweak together. The black rifle community is not a cool  as the MBR forum here and maybe that's why we get all kinds of red rifle, milsurp, reloading questions here. It's a super helpful community around the M14 platform. :D

Hope this helps! :D

Cheers,
Barney

Hungry I will be there on the saturday with my service truck so I should have plenty of tools and a vice if the need arises!

Hungry here: Looking forward to playing M14 on the service truck. At least at the Edmonchuk clinic in 2008, we were in a quonset hut with TWO service trucks.. one for rebarreling and one for welding. Yuk yuk yuk :D

I'm going to try to make it up. I have to be in California on Tuesday so figured "hey, Calgary is on the way to California from Seattle, right?". Don't add me to the list yet as my plans aren't finalized but I'm hoping to drop in and meet the master. I'll be riding my Harley so unfortunately won't be able to bring rifles or tools.

Hey man, I'm not trying to hijack the Calgary thread, but I'm planning to attend the clinic you have scheduled in July in Manitoba and I was wondering what to bring (so I can make sure I have it between now and then)

All I have from the stuff below is what I've bolded, can you specify what each individual person should bring?

Things to bring: your M14, some basic tools, notebook, pens, digital camera, rags, ball peen hammer, punches, screwdrivers, more punches, TIG Welder, Service Truck (vise for rebarreling), fired brass for us to measure, plastic or rubber mallet, wood block or 2, Black and Decker Workmate (clamping ability for your barreled action or stock), masking tape, duct tape, Loctite (blue and red stuff), I'll bring the Devcon and all glass bedding materials....more to follow as I remember to remind myself.

Hungry here: STill firming up plans for the Winnipeg Clinic on 31 July... Nothing confirmed or cemented down yet. Stay tuned. :)

Sunday Loner

Do I smell bad or what???? Am I missing something, How come everybodies going Saturday....I promise I'll shower before I go Sunday :dancingbanana:

I talked to JR at the shooting edge yesterday and he said that the sunday course will end at the same time the edge stampede bbq starts, so sunday would be good too.

Okay, it's late on Fri evening and I have a SR match to prep my brain for. So have a look at my first post and ensure that I got the right person down, the correct CGN handle, the right payment method, payment status, and correct date of attendance.

I cannot change anything until I return from Base Borden's Amiens Range tomorrow evening.... :D

Cheers,
Barney
