wel this year we finally had enough pool one tags to be assured an adult tag,i was getting ready to submit the moose tags and one member was reluctant to hand in his tag ,thats okay the guy was like the lone ranger but now he takes another member with him,we have both a moose camp with a deer camp, they expect to still come for deer but the moose they said they will go on there own so i called an emrgency meeting,we basically decided that both the lone ranger and new sidekick are not welcome to the group hunts as they now f up the hunting pools ,we have some new blood but there in group 2 not prefranced,oh well but i guess everybody gets a new member in that tries to steal members,as a few of the founding member own the properties our camp is secure, the member that joined the loan ranger is a rookie and he was given choice locations on stand last year but would fall asleep,he had deer go by him within feet, just ranting because now instead of guarenteed we are not for an adult tag for this year

We don't have enough to guarantee an adult moose tag at all, only 5 guys. we're a deer, moose camp combo as well. We had one clown who hunted with us for years, and he used to buy his deer liscence on the way to camp on saturday. He then made sure that on monday morning he had to hunt "his" stand, where he had shot a deer, usually a doe, every opening morning for years. When it was pointed out that maybe he should apply in july for an antlerless deer tag, like everybody else,he said "why should i spend $35.00 in july? He now hunts else where.

amazes me the crap that goes on...... these guys should be happy to hunt.... Saying that i am backing out of a hunt that i have been in for 2 years.... it's a shotgun group for deer in southern ontario..... The only reason i am backing out of it is it doesnt feel like a hunt to me, We push the bush then shoot any deer that run out..... While alot of guys enjoy this hunt and i hold no disregard for them, I am more into the in the stand archery hunt.

If you back out of a hunt well in advance, for whatever reaason i see no reason but after going to all meetings and putting in input and your views, you submit the tag and then before the tag gets put in you pull out and expect to come to the deer hunt thats where i see a problem,Im over it now just will have to put in a new area,we are now putting in a rules and regulations to all hunt memberships and becoming a official in our eyes hunt club .there will be probation periods for new members ,and night court if anyone misses a deer or moose all in good fun,i guess it will be more of a team player hunt,we still want the hunt to be enjoyable ,which for the most part it has been, funny thing is where lone ranger and sidekick want to hunt take 12 premium tags to get a moose permit and a calf tag taks 4,unless they join another group which is fine by us,just some people are sneaky,in our grouphunts wegenerally put people in stands or locations they want and work with each other,we do dog but the deer bush we hunt is so large there is no way you can do it and shoot everything that gets out.

I'm confused here guys. pardon my ignorance but can soemone explain how the licences/tags work in Ont.
Is the whole place on a draw? priority points? Over the counter tags? Group hunts and hunt clubs?

I'm in Alberta now, but originally from Ont. The last lic I bought there was for Moose/bear I believe and was valid fo any moose and/or bear. I think it was a $10 licence.:)
Sounds like a few changes since then.

No pardon required.

To get a moose tag is easy as going to the license outlet. You will be handed a calf only tag.

To get a cow or bull tag is a little different. Every year in the hunting regulations, there is a guaranteed group size for each wildlife management unit (WMU). (Meaning that if the group of hunters that applies together is equal or larger then the guaranteed group size, you will get a Bull or Cow tag--depending on which one you/your group applied for.

So if the area you are hunting has a guarantee group number of 3 for a bull tag and 4 people apply as a party, then you will be guaranteed 1 bull tag (more might be allotted to your group, but you are guaranteed 1 bull tag).

So the group would submit there info i.e. hunter id numbers together?

So if a guy isn't a part of a hunt club, he never gets to hunt a bull?

How is it checked in the field?
Is it the same with deer or bear?

yea you fill out a form with all the licences involved in the group draw
no if you apply solo the odds are against you that you could be picked in the draw.all depends on how many adult moose tags there is for each WMU
most goup hunts the hunters stay in touch with each other with either CB Radios or two way radios
deer you buy your tag and its good for a buck only ,when you buy your tg you apply for an antlerless tag, depending again on the WMU tell on weither you get the antlerless tag
bear is any ### goes with your tag

Jeez I would kill to join a camp in Ontario... I can't believe guys who would agree to be part of the group would pull that.

I had to pull out of a gang this year, but I still deer hunt with them. The problem was there was 8 of us applying to a WMU with an 11 person guarantee. Not worth it for me, I am not taking 12 days off of work to split a calf 8 ways. I joined up with 3 others that I have hunted with before and we applied to a WMU with a 2 person guarantee. Now we have a bull and cow tag for 4 of us. I know it wasn't the nicest thing to do but I am not just going to hunt, I am going to fill the freezer. I gave lots of notice and there isn't any hard feelings so all is good.

John, I agree completely with your view. What I don't get is a group of fellows that love to hunt, but refuse to go to an area where they can get a tag, or even two, every year.

Hunting is not cheap, so why not maximize your odds of filling the freezer? They must love hunting that one spot, but what good is it if you only draw a tag every 4-5 years, or longer?

BTW good luck to you and your new group! What WMU are you heading to?
