Is there a source of decent 7.62 soviet in soft point or something non-jacketed? Nobody locally seems to have any and don't know when they'll be getting it. I'm on Vancouver Island. Thanks.

Hunting SP ammo for the 7.62X39 is getting scarce.Whatever American made ammo you see is old stock, and you better scoop it up,because U.S isn't exporting any 7.62X39.

Doug Rainer at rain& shine / had some commercial ammo at the swift current gun show last week end - Eley I think? price not bad , but don't
know for sure as I didnot need it

That is the story I got too. Not what a fella wants to hear. I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open for a few boxes and learn something about reloading.

I wonder about pulling the bullet and pressing something SP around the same weight in there?

So between this and finding it tough to get good buckshot loads for my 20gauge locally I may just be forced into some sort of reloading setup. Suggestions are always welcome.

I picked up Igman 123gr. soft points not too long ago, I am guessing they will do the job on a deer. There must be some of that still around, I guess I better hold onto the brass from them to reload in the future.

LOL I was diggin around my ammo cans the other day and found some old Remington Express 20ga. Buckshot, and I do not even have a 20 ga. anymore. Good reason to go buy one I think :D

I have some.

They are soft point jackets but pricey as hell. Found it at reliable for $13.50 a pack of 20. They were so firm on the price even though I was spending a couple of bucks there. If you really have a hard time finding some I could part with some.

there will be some floatin round vancouver soon i hear.... but that's the rumour mill grindin. for what it's worth

It's usually worth about what you pay for it. If it happens it would be great to hear about. I could probably work a in-law visit in there and come out looking like the good guy.

I was up at Granlunds in scambled liver the other day and it is starting to look as though I may take a shallow dive into the deep pool of reloading. I've got an enfield that is still a good shooter, if I could afford to shoot it, along with a chinese type 56 that is turning out to shoot alot better than I expected or payed for. I would like to make the sks my hunting rifle. Hence looking for some decent ammo. Some custom loads for the 20 gauge would be nice too.

I've no doubts about the effectiveness of the 7.62x39 for the hunting I'll be doing.

is it possible to remove the tips of the FMJ bullet to create a soft point? Just a thought.

Not a good idea!
The jacket, and core can separate in the barrel leaving the jacket lodged in the barrel. The next round headed down the pipe could hurt,or enen kill you.

It's true this _could_ happen.
A better alternative would be pulling the FMJ flipping it around and loading it backwards, as long as it's a lead core bullet it will expand very well and the accuracy doesn't seem any worse than regular ball ammo, but the drop past 100 yards is different!

Jeez, folks, quit whining! Pull the bullets out of Czech surplus, replace powder and seat 125gr Hornady bulk bullets or Speer or whatever floats your boat. Why paying the price of commercial ammo when you can have accuracy of your custom handloaded ammo for a fraction of cost?
