A bear may have attacked and killed a missing hunter, whose remains were found Wednesday, police said.

The body of the hunter, missing since Tuesday, was discovered by searchers about one kilometre west of where his empty vehicle was parked.

RCMP said the hunter showed signs of being mauled by a bear, but didn't know if this had happened before or after his death. They are waiting for the results of an autopsy.

The man was hunting about 15 km away from Sundre, a town northwest of Calgary.

Police have not named the man, only saying at the time he went missing that he was an avid hunter who had dressed for the weather.

He was a local guy, Bob Wagner, bow hunting about a klick west of Highway 22. I've been passing the search area for the past two days now.

The asshats on the comments section of the article need some reaming. Anyone want to help?
 
I read four or five of these stupid comments and I wanted to hurl. I'm thoroughly disgusted with the state of people's mindset in this country.

RIP Mr. Wagner, I'm sad to say you were part of a dying breed.

A tragedy for sure and it's very disturbing to see a few of the comments on that blog. It's sad when parties on both sides of an issue use a tragedy like this to further their own agendas. My thoughts and prayers are with the family right now......political manouvering can wait till later!
 
From what my Aunt told me, it is the same little patch of land I used to hunt.
Scary thought! That's two hunters in two years dying from a Grizzly encounter in the Sundre area now.
Fellow was a butcher for the AG Grocery store in Didsbury.

Sad day.

Started reading all the comments onthe article but it is just a bash fest. No one will win. May as well go have a fist fight with them all. No one will ever understand the other through anger.

I tried to read through some of the comments, the level of ignorance is astounding
now I think I agree with Okley from AM640, why are taxpayers money wasted by CBC to provide a discussion board when they should be reporting the news?

I am glad they found the remains so the family can complete their grieving process. As for the anti-hunting remarks, people need to see the wild for real and not the Disney version. Life for a wild animal is hard, short, brutal and often cruel. Most hunters try for a one shot kill, which is far more merciful than the bear preferred killing method is to stomp the prey to death or biting the head. Hunting is an important part of every culture on this planet, it’s also an organic and healthy activity for the people involved and a important source of food for many people in this country.
As for the bear population, the black bears here in BC are booming and the Grizzly population is doing well also, I fully expect Grizzlies to appear in North Vancouver within 3 years. Predatory attacks mainly by black bears are very real and the black bear is the most unpredictable of the bear family. My work takes me into the bush, I will not go without a shotgun and bearspray, when you are in the bush you are part of the foodchain, where you are on that chain is up to you. I also believe that the eligibility for a handgun permit called an “Authorization To Carry” (ATC) should be extended beyond people who work in the bush to anyone being the bush who is willing to take the course and required practice. Before people say “We don’t want to be like the US” do your homework, bush carry of handguns for protection was common in Canada up till the 80’s as was handgun hunting. I believe all bowhunters should carry a handgun for protection and quick dispatch of a wounded animal.
 
The ideots on that thread that are all for the animails need a leasson or two in history. it is our God given right to hunt and theres to shut there low life mouths. Our haerts go out to the family and if anyone knows any of those low lifes take them out hunting and let them walk home.
 
One comment in the "treehugger versus hunter" forum described in the earlier post, was the guy bowhunting should have had the right to carry a sidearm. My father during the 60's & 70's carried a 9mm while hunting & trapping. He used it regularly to either dispatch an animal or in self defence. It's a shame that the violence on the street / suicidal terrorists and anti gun propoganda politicians have brought endless public shame to a right we all should still have.
