Hunter Killed by Bear (CBC comments )

Anti hunting static

My condolences to the Wagners.

The anti hunting sentiment is born in ignorance of the natural world. Most hunters I know are conservationists with profound respect for the bush and everything in it. How many of those bashers in that blog are ever out in the bush in November? Youth are less and less concerned with protecting the wild country because they are generally uninvolved with it. Too much artificial crap these days is not building knowledge or understanding and protects no one but the timid.

It is now reported on the news that the hunter was indeed, killed by the bear. To start with, they didn't know for sure, if the bear killed the hunter, or just "mauled' him, after the hunter may have died from other causes. However, they state autopsy reports show the bear killed the man.
Apparently no evidence of whether it was a grizzly, or a black bear. I wonder if there would be DNA evidence of the bear on the victim to determine if it was grizzly, or black? Or did they even think of this at autopsy? Lots of "What if," tales will likely be told on this one. How did a bear manage to kill a hunter armed with modern bow hunting equipment?
If they could find a bear with an arrow in it, much more could be learned, or guessed at.
Was the hunter too law abbiding and let a legally protected grizzly get too close?

---bush carry of handguns for protection was common in Canada up till the
80’s as was handgun hunting.

Colin, I don't think it was ever legal to hunt in Canada with a handgun, at least after the 1930s when it was required to register handguns.

Rip hunter. Its soooo stupid that some people use times like these for their own hidden agendas.....they need a kick in the junk if ya ask me.

As quoted on this board, the last Moose taken in Ontario by a handgun was 1978

People focus on the wong things in these events, from my experience. I am an officer in this field (no guff please) and once had a well educated investigator tell me that wolf tracks were bear tracks... WTF. I Filed a formal complaint.

I know thats not relevant here, but you have to wonder were some people heads are.

Those wolf tracks becoming bear tracks wasn't the infamous case in northern Saskatchewan, was it? The cute wolves can't do anything bad, you know, or Disney may lose attendees at the theatres.
