Hunting Ammo suggestions for 7.62x39 SKS??

The PVRI hunting ammo seems to be a little better quality than the MFS stuff, but as long as you're getting decent groups at 100 yards and are confident in your abilities, just about any soft point will do the trick.

Point Of Impact. It's likely the soft points won't hit the same spot you are aiming at as whatever surplus you normally use for target practice.

OK, yes I understand now. These MFS 125gr are what I normally shoot in the rifle anyways, so I have the scope dialed into the MFS rounds anyways.

One thing I was looking for info on was the projectile composition. They are magnetic projectiles (not just the casing). I pulled the cartridge apart and the projectile clung to a magnet, which I found surprising, as it appeared from the outside to be copper jacketed with a lead point, both non magnetic metals. Does anyone know if this projectile have a steel core? If it has a steel core is it legal for hunting?

If it is a bi- metal jacket , I would try it in wet newspaper or water jugs or something like that to see if it expands , look up Maine junker on YouTube he tested some bi metal hollow points and soft points in 7.62x39 in ballistics gel , the expansion was non existent . I personally would stick to copper jacketed , unless it was proven to me that that particular bimetal bullet would expand on game . I have had good luck with hornady 123 gr soft points , but those were in handloads

I've found PRVI to be the best shooting and maintain close POI to surplus rounds. The Hornady soft points seem loaded hot and I had to re-sight to use them.

Fred, what does POI mean? , only asking cuz I don't know

Sorry, it means "point of impact". On my SKS, surplus was bang on at 100 yds. with the 100m setting on the sights. I had to move the rear sight to the 200m setting when using the MFS hunting ammo.
And, it blows a BIG hole in the heart of a deer ! No problem following the blood trail !

If you hit a deer BEHIND the shoulder, you blow a good sized hole through the heart/lung area. Just about any caliber will do the job, including the 7.62x39.

The MFS is a lead bullet with a jacket that includes a thin steel layer. I have found it to be mediocre for accuracy. If you get a decent group with it, you are good to go. According to FREDSKS ^^ it expands ok.

Just remember, you only get one good shot. So when you shoot, be confident it is a well aimed shot. A poor first shot is never improved by a fast second shot.

Ganderite and dnepr, you are both correct, its a copper plated steel jacket. I melted the bullet with a torch and the lead poured out leaving a steel shell.

I find the PRVI 123 grain soft points to be about the best hunting ammo for this caliber that I have found. I have still yet to try the Hornady SST stuff though. Hard to find it.
