I may be moving north from Southern Ontario. I have come to love coyote and rabbit hunting in my area - but I think neither of these critters exist in NW Ontario.

Need some help understanding what opportunities are up there - I assume bear and moose, whitetails too? Any smaller game like wolves or grouse? What about waterfowl? Any input appreciated fellows - its a tough decision to leave coyotes and bunnies behind

Are you serious buddy??? You are moving to hunting paradise... no more cottontails for you, but plenty of snowshoe hare... all sorts of waterfowl and small game... deer, moose and bear... gotta drive a long way for turkeys now though... You will be a happy camper up there...

Wolves
Bears
Deer (some of the best deer hunting in Ontario)
Moose
Grouse (more then you can shake a stick at)
Snowshoe hares (about thrice the size of a cottontail)
Ducks and even more ducks

You're seriously complaining about moving from southern ON to a sportsman's paradise? REALLY?

Hey Hoytcanon, just sold a shottie to your boy. Yes I am serious...I have never been north of Sudbury or Temagami. I really have no clue what to expect - grew up in southern ON and am elated to hear about snowshoes up there (my passion and that of my beagle). And, I only regained an interest in hunting in 2008 so am still green. Will be moose hunting my first time this fall for instance.

Ahhh, yes... he loves the Tobin... says it kicks like a mule! My memory is very lacking! Seriously, the area you are going to is excellent country for pretty much everything Northern Ontario has available... we drew another bull tag up that way... so Hudson and I are heading out next weekend...

I just moved south after being in the area you are looking to move too. If you plan to hunt with the beagle make sure you do it in the fall and early winter. Once you get into December the snow is too deep for the beagles. My beagles would check my trapline with me but never ventured far off the snowshoe trail. Most of my hare hunting was done by ATV while chasing grouse and moose along logging roads in the fall or snares while on the trapline in January and february.

I miss being in the north but the winters are long and cold, so make sure you develop some winter hobbies or you will be holed up for 5-6 months a year.

I do! I like to fish and ice fishing is another draw - especially monsters that LOTW may hold in the walleye and laketrout category.

I got coyotes on my island on LOTW. Feel free to harvest.

Unbelievable! Coyotes in Kenora - really?

Awesome - great meeting him. He mentioned it kicks too! Good luck - only 3 in my group and I'm looking forward to just getting out there this year. A friend of the family just got his first bull tag after 29 years of applying so I guess it's time for some scouting for you and Hudson!

Back in the late 70s/early 80s when I lived in Ear Falls, Ontario there was lots of good deer, moose, bear hunting quite a few places off Hwy 105 between Vermillion Bay and Red Lake.
The bush was crawling with grouse both ruffed and spruce back them.
Don't know what it's like there now but there could be 1/4 of the big game and birds as there was back then and still be good hunting.
Usually had my moose by the end of the first day of the season where I hunted around Barrens Lake.
