Hunting Camo Patterns too dark??

Is is just me or are most hunting camo patterns too dark especially at distance.

It seems that they look great in the store but when out in the field and at any kind of distance the person who is wearing them looks like a dark sasquatch (personal observations of hunting partners) and actually stands out quite well. To me the patterns should be not so closed (small) and more open (larger) and the colors should definitely be lighter (more tans and light greys and less dark greens and browns). Close in at bow hunting distances most civilian patterns don't look too bad but any kind of distance and they darken up substantially.

Rifle stocks the same way. Many look like the black stick of death at distance and is the first thing you notice.

Because its made to appeal to the hunters eye. Its for them to think they look good. And most people these days wear it out around town anyway.
Animals are brown. And hard to see yet camo is green and yellow.

Brown....Exactly! If green were such a good camo color the good lord would have made these animals green. The next time you're in a sporting goods store look at the clothing racks, what color are the hunting clothes? So if nature tells us the best camo color is brown, then what is the obsession with green? The answer is simple.

Most camo today is desigened to catch the hunter rather than to help catch the quarry. The bottom line is if you want a camo pattern that looks good to wear on a date, then you're at the wrong website; however, if you want a camo pattern that works in All Seasons and in All Terrain, then I welcome you to the ASAT Nation.

Need to match your pattern to your surroundings. Mossy oak break up is gunna probably stick out like a sore thumb when standing in a field, this is when an open terrain pattern is key. One pattern will not fit every situation. I've got a growing collection that's got marsh patterns, green spring time patterns, hardwoods, snow, open country and Canadian shield to name a few. One size won't fit all... That being said some of the best hunting garments are carharts and tough duck. Just gotta play each situation appropriately

Around here, the bears are black, moose are a charcoal of sorts and the rabbits are currently white.

I don't put much thought into patterns and colors, I just make sure the material is quiet. I hate noisy hunting clothes.

Most camo patterns are too intricate, and are designed to fool hunters into parting with their money, not so much for fooling deer. Probably one of the best for hunting is the old woodland camo pattern. But then, keep in mind that in Ontario, during rifle seasons, you have to go out dressed like a big orange traffic cone, you have to wonder if camo is really necessary at all.

I have tried almost every pattern and although maybe a bit off topic, the best camo I have used for colour is the gore optifade waterfowl. Sitka is damned expensive but very effective. As for big game it tends to become irrelevant when covered in blaze orange so thats obviously a consideration. Overall camo is sold to hunters as previously stated and we're suckers for new and improved anything.

Woodland camo, Hmm interesting. Woodland camo IMHO is actually one of the worst offenders when it comes to standing out as dark black at normal rifle distances.. The pattern is darker than many civilian patterns to begin with and also fairly closed in design. I used to use that when I started to hunt because it was cheap and readily available from mil surplus so I do have experience with it.

What I don't get is some of the new camo gear that Canadian Tire sells that has blaze orange zippers and pockets on the outside...?
I understand the versatility of something reversible but don't understand this configuration.

I buy camo gear because it's the only stuff that I can find that has the right pockets in the right places for what I carry around and it is kind of water repellent.

But not enough.

In my duck blind I wear a darK green Helley Hansen rain coat over my Cabela's Dry plus camo hunting jacket with all the ammo, wallet and hand warming pockets.

Camo only works if you use it intelligently, something lost on most wearers. Just wearing the stuff isn't going to make you successful. In fact drab solid colored clothes can be as effective as the fanciest Copyrighted pattern. Check this guys camo out, he did quite well for himself. Guess his name?

Camo for men is like Lingerie to woman, except lingerie has a purpose. Totally designed for human appeal, to bring out the little G.I. Joe in all of us. Kind of comical when men start to dress a like, so they can shoot a colour blind deer 400 yards away off the hood of their P.U. truck.

I agree with your comments and several replies. This is a very interesting thread. My opinion is that brown or green colors are effective but the most important quality for camouflage is a matte tone. The camouflage sold are often good looking and brigh or reflective. I buy camouflage clothing because it looks good. But of you wish to have a real camouflage, matte in whatever brownish, greenish, withish and greyish is good. Put your clothes in the washing machine several times. Make the dirty if course and don't be afraid to wash. The reflective and bright colours will go away. It won't look as good as new but it will be more effective. The Russians use matte white and grey in the woods. I might not like them but their camo is effective. Another army I won't name use a blueish camouflage tone and I might not like them either. But the camouflage is effectIve. Also, Look at what armies are using. They often use a camouflage that represents their geographical characteristics (jungle, snow, desert or forest). They vary in colors and camouflage design. The only common characteristic is matte tone. In conclusion, whatever works ad long as it is preferably matte. I like real tree max 4. I don't know why. It looks cool I guess and it is absolutly subjective.After 4 years of wearing and washing. It is matte and I am certain you would not find me 50 yards in front of you in the woods.

The funniest part about the marketing and sale of camouflage hunting gear is the camp patterns on stuff that is not visible. Small patches of pattern on "hunting" boots and my personal favorite, camouflage winter base layers.
People have a laughable inability to see reason and logic when faced with a clever marketing scheme.

Yep - the predator camo works pretty well. Most of the other stuff just makes you look like a multi colored blob.

I use some lighter coloured digital camo patterns, similar to CADPAT. Been working fine for me, well at least I think it's working but I'm not looking at myself out there!

Just googled that predator camo, never seen that before looks interesting.
