I need some clarification. I have never gone out specifically for them though...

At dusk (in the gopher field I frequent) I can hear them howling like MAD there must be a 100 of them in the vincinity!

Question is about hunting and daylight - regs say that we can only be out hunting for an hour after sunset right? yet most predators are quite nocturnal.

What time of day do you yote hunters go at?

I shoot gophers in our hay fields during the day and towards the early evening/dusk the parade of yotes comes along to snack on the carcasses. I can usually bag one pretty quick and then I have to take the others on the run. They get pretty skittish though and it takes a while before they get stupid enough to come back. We have roosters that attract the bastards at all times of the day and we used caged live roosters to attract them to the traps and snares.

It seems on warmer days in the winter you can always find more yotes in the early morning as they are out and about looking for mice, rabbits, voles etc. As the days become colder coyotes tend to move around alot more during the day (and by day I mean all day long) trying to get enough energy to help them stay warm. In the spring and summer they will tend to be out earlier in the mornign b/c the heat of the day makes them a little more prone to being lazy (just like we are when it is hot out). Anyway, I have more luck hunting coyotes in the morning hours if I am truck hunting but if I am calling they tend to come ALL DAY LONG and that my frined is fun shooting.

Have fun with it and like the other post above get yourself a call, get em in close and unleash the fury!

In Alberta, when you are hunting coyotes for predator control purposes, as opposed to sporting purposes, there is no time of day restriction, I asked the fish cops specifically.

However, there is still the question of how you can be sure of your target and what is beyond if it is getting too dark. I wonder what the fish cops would say about jacklighting coyotes. The other option is to get a NV riflescope, but again, you still have an obligation to make sure you can see to the end of the bullets flightpath. Major $$$ for one of those high grade NVDs.

Oh, probably... that one particular perversion of poaching involving making a critter stand still by shining a really bright spotlight at it.

Yotes

Anytime of the day with the right technique to your predator call. Ideal calibers are 22-250 or 223. Of course I have created a flying ball of mut fur with my odd-6!!!!!!!! Good Luck!
