I know that all deer, moose, grouse, beat hunters ect. usually do and SHOULD eat their kills and make the most of the "left overs" ie. get the furs, mount it, stuff it, ect. Now what about animals like raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, coyotes, foxes, ect? Do you guys eat these too? I wouldn't mind the rabbit or squirrel but do people eat raccoons, foxes and all? I wanna hunt these animals but I kinda feel like if I shot them and just left them there(if thats okay and what people do) that its kinda a waste?

The reason people usually hunt foxes is for pelts. They make beautiful pelts and it's nice to have one hanging over the fireplace or up on the wall. I have only shot a racoon with no intentions of a pelt because of the damage it was doing to my tack building. It was living in the attic and having babies up there and making such a mess. Not to metion eating all of my dogs food and tearing up the garbage. I hunt coyotes and foxes in the winter months for two reasons. One because they are fun and challenging to hunt, and two, because I am teaching myself how to make nice pelts. I bought some books on tanning and making a nice pelt and it's nice to see a finished product you did yourself. As for the meat, use it to attract more coyotes.

Moose and deer are for eating, hide goes back in the bush for the critters
Bear is for meat and hide
Rabbit and squirrel (grey or black) are good eating. Rabbit pelts are usually destroyed when cleaning. Pelts of both go in the bush or garbage.

Raccoons, coyotes, and foxes are for hide. You could eat one if you really wanted to, I suppose. I have killed hundreds (trapping since I was 8 years old) and the carcass goes back in the bush. I don't personnally consider any of these animals vermin so I have never shot one and just left it.

Whatever is edible, get eaten .... And maximum use is done with everything else that gets shot ... Hunting ethics 101 ...

Vermin/problem critters are a bit different, but their carcass usually ends up either burned, or buried. No sense getting rid of one problem, and attracting a whole lot more problem critters in the process.

If I'm not going to eat it, and if it isn't harming or threatening to harm my family or my animals/etc, I can't think of a reason to shoot it.

I have heard of an old timer feeding a friend "wild dog", and another story of a man eatting a marmot when he lost a bet. Clean it, strip the hide off and cool it like all other game. I do not practice this code but feeding other wildlife meets my needs.

In my younger years I ate ground hogs and coons. Usually put them in stews. I even ate a crow once! It had "blue" breast meat and not too bad.My wife's granma in Beaver lake Ont.also was given lots of beaver from old Finn trappers(she and us are Finns) My dad said thet ate pigeon during the depression. Waste not want not! JITC

So if I killed a few ground hogs would it be best to kinda "hide" the bodies....animals that will want to eat them can still easily find them but I guess it'd be better to not leave them in the open for anyone too stumble apon them who would not be pleased to see them?

I suppose if they are near someones home or lifestock you really don't want to attract unwanted predators. Otherwise between coyotes, crows, turkey vultures and magpies they won't be there long.

Pigeon is very good. Especially off of a grain field.
Where do you think the passenger pigeon went????
I try to eat everything that I shoot. I have not done so with gophers, coyotes, and foxes.
Pigeon, raccoon, snipe, coot, have been in the pot. Not too fond of coots, they are now safe from me!!

A friend who is a trapper in the states sell the coon meat .I've eaten beaver ground hogs possum squirel porcupine and host of others that went into the stew pot but never fox or coyote.

I try to make the best of everything I Shoot/Kill Wether I am eating it or selling the furs the one exception is Mr Porcupine that decided tochew on the wrong cabin all the same a lot of the quills were saved for some of my dry flys.

Pigeon were actully introduced on purpose to North America, so if all else failed they could be raised/shot/trapped & eaten by hungry settlers.

They will likely disappear quite quickly. My Uncle likes the families of foxes, so he fills a pail with gophers and tosses them out around the fox den. They are cool to see, and he has no small livestock the foxes could harm. They probably live off mice and other small rodents, which is a good thing. He doesn't keep any birds.

I don't really have a prob with those that hunt "vermin" (I wouldn't do it unless they were affecting me directly) but what annoys me are the beautiful coyote and other furs that're tossed with the corpse.

coon, rabbit, and squirrel are great eating. crow is even good if cooked slowly.

the only things that people hunt in ontario that i havent tried yet are the canines. although it cant be too bad considering dog apparently tastes good.

In alberta its a crime to waste the hide of any furbearing animal. its easy to put them to good use here because there are fish and game depots everywhere, you take in your skinned hide, they provide salt to salt it, then enter yoru name into a draw for a rifle at the end of the seaon... its a great system i think They sell the hides to tannerys and put the money back into the wildlife funds.
