Hello folks,
in two weeks i have my quebec hunting exam
it';s the Initiation a la chasse avec les armes a feu

are there any advices that you could give me?
i have no idea how the course/exam works

Isn't there a course of instruction you can take? If not, how about a handbook or guide to regulations from the provincial authorities?

In Québec in order to obtain your hunting with firearm certificate you must take two courses. The first one is the ‘Canadian firearm safety course’ and the second is’ Initiation to hunting with firearm’. The CFSC lasts about eight hours and is usually given on a saturday. There are two exams for the CFSC the first is a theoretical exam of fifty questions ( about 30 true or false type and 20 multiple choice type) the second exam is the practical one where you are asked to identify cartridges, than you are asked to handle certain firearms etc. follow the ‘vital four’ and ‘prove’ and you should not have any problems with the pass note of 80% for each exams.

This is usually followed on sunday with the IHWF course that lasts about eight hours. The one exam is of fifty questions with 30 or so true or false and about 20 of multiple choice. The passing note is 70%

Good luck

Pay attention, ask questions, be alert and you will do well. Stay away from the "Know it alls". I never get over the idiots that come into a course thinking that they have to show everyone that they know everything. Go in with the thought that you have everything to learn and don't be afraid to ask questions. You're doing the course for yourself not for the others.

Good luck, let us know how it goes. :)

Wow. The Manitoba Hunter's Education pass mark is 96% on a 50 question test.

i just did the exam today
it wasnt hard.
i passed
i was overwhelmed by the huge number of rules and laws

Félicitation! Now get out there and do us proud!

My hunting parties are pretty full but I could steer you in the direction of some good areas to start. What part of MTL are you in? What are you planning to hunt?

i will be mainly out for 'chevreuil'
i live in Laval
but if there's a group going for moose or Caribou i would like to participate

thanks alot

The problem with deer hunting in Quebec is that all the crown land is mainly too far north, the good side of you living in Laval is that you are within driving distance of deer territory. Mirabel, St-Colomban, St-Jerome area has a good whitetail population as does the eastern townships and the southwesten part of the provience. You will have to find a landowner that will grant you permission to hunt or join a party that has access. Check out the local classified ads ( www.lespac.com , www.lespuce.com ) as some landowners advertise if they rent their land to hunters. Look for ads like this http://lespac.com/app/detail.php?PH...&no_region_de=0&no_region_a=&no_region=&prio= Check out the ZEC's also http://www.zecquebec.com/index.jsp . The ZEC's are mostly north so they are much better for Moose and small game. I used to go to the ZEC des Nymphes for Grouse and Rabbit. It's beautiful out there and only a few hours drive.
Are you a member at a range? Most ranges are also hunting associations that can point you in the right direction.
Start asking some farmers for permission to hunt groundhogs in the summer. Once you have access and prove to them that you are responsable they may give you access to good deer plots or point you in the right direction. Shooting hogs in the summer is also great fun and a good way to start hunting. If I set out early on a groundhog safari I will see deer, fox, grouse...
I made business cards with my personal info on it and hand them out to the farmers. That way they have the info on who is on their land and can pass your phone number on to other farmers that have problems with hogs. Just remember that you may be 5kms from the farm but you are still in thier backyard. Act as any guest would and a whole world of hunting oppertunities will open up for you.

Finding good deer areas in Quebec can be long but worthwhile.
Good luck! :)
