Looking at possibility of doing this in the fall.

Anyone who has done this do you have any suggestions. Boat is wide aluminum 16 ft with 30hp outboard. Was thinking of finding an island to set up camp, then hunt shorelines in morning and evening.

Elk are field animals, only reason they'd come to a river to drink, usually at the same spot. Think there are more productive ways to get the job done.

I would think so too. But if you've got the time it might be fun. You might get access to new country using that approach. IIRC Steve Rinella did a float trip for bison in Alaska and got one and that's not the sort of animal you generally equate with float hunting.

That's how we hunt moose, but moose habitat tends to be close to water as opposed to elk in the Highland parks.

It depends where the Elk live. In the mountains the Elk often live in the river valleys where the best graze is. Elk are ruminants, like cattle and will eat similarly. Another reason for Elk to be found by the river, is to cross to habitat on the other side. Lots of reasons for Elk to be found along a river bank.
