There is a Hockey hall of fame, a Golf hall of fame, I think there is even a Cricket Hall of Fame.
Why not have a Hunting Hall Of Fame?
Anybody heard of any such institution? I sure haven't!
If the Hockey hall of fame can make money and promote the sport of Hockey why can't we do the same thing for hunting!
Thousands of tourists a year go to the Mega-Stores like Bass-Pro and Cabellas just to take pictures and see the stuff!
I wouldn't spend a nickel to see a hockey puck... but I would to see famous hunters and their exploits.
What do you think?

A Hunting Hall of Fame? I don't see the need.

Read books!! :)

Most of the guys who have travelled everywhere and done everything wrote a book about it.

I just keep acquiring excellent hunting books. I especially love African hunting stories. Currently I am reading Horn of the Hunter by Robert Ruark. Great read!

I've got books on most of the legendary hunting characters of African history.

I know that OFAH and partners are building a hunting heritage centre soon. I have donated them a shoulder mount Elk apparently the last legally shot in Ontario when I was with the ELk foundation I had posssesion of it and when they closed I donated it so it would remain in Ontario and Don McVitty has donated around one hundred museum quality mounts from around the world. This would be a great place to make that suggestion.

Boone And Crockett does a great job of record keeping but they don't have a tourist attraction hall of fame to honor great hunters.

True that but one has to wonder what the criteria for a great hunter would consist of. Some of the hunters of noteriety(sp) who harvested many animals may not have be as successfull had it not been for the guide.:)

The problem with a hunting hall of fame is that our society is so anti-firearm (etc) that the average person wouldn't go. and even if they got dragged in there they would probably just start screaming cruelty and animal rights yada yada. I don't think it would fly.

Although it would be cool to have a hunting 'museum' of sorts that could display all the firearms, bows, knives, etc

it was about a year ago, that the town of little britian hosted a show like this..i could not make it...
the show wasto be of some record mounts ,any one else remember this or who it was that put on the show?

I agree the criteria would be difficult to establish. As we have seen, even on this site, hunting practices which are accepted in one place are not accepted in another. The second part of this problem is whether or not you would accept the nominations of professional hunters who make their living - or part of it - from hunting, or if you would include only sport hunters.

Perhaps hunters would be awarded for the most number of record book heads, but that simply becomes a numbers game and diminishes the sport in my eyes. Perhaps it could be based on the hunter who has been successful on the most number or continents. Elgin Gates, Jack Oconnor, and Prince Pahlavi come to mind - however this is flawed in a number of ways - firstly getting around ain't as tough as it used to be, and secondly only the well healed need apply.

Perhaps we should simply acknowledge those who work hard to keep the public supportive of hunting, because without the support of the voting public, hunting is finished.

Another fella who is interested in this sort of project is Raymond Olreich he owns Big Game adventures magazine in BC and has been talking about a museum style building to hold mounts and such for the public to view.
I could contact him if anyone was interested in getting involved.

I disagree, our society isn't as anti-firearm as the press would like us to believe, the Liberal downfall attributes to that. I do agree that a Hall of Fame would probably not fly though, B&C does a good enough job.

Loved the mounts that are (were?) in the Calgary Airport & Banff Springs Hotel, just to name a few (sorry Don McVittie removed his from his dealership before he sold/retired) Found the "pinned-location" world map in his office to be just as interesting !

YES YES YES YES....THE GUIDE.....THE MOST IMPORTANT PART....THE BRAINS OF THE WHOLE OPERATION....THE GREASE ON THE WHEEL...THE GLUE THAT BINDS EVERYTHING TOGETHER....ALL RISE AND SALUTE THE GUIDE:D :D

..but most important is the 30-06......;)

Good idea Redd, as usual, and I have my ten dollars here to pay for my brick on the wall that attests I am an uber-jaeger-meister!!!!! ;-)

One problem I see is that big money hunters, the ones that have no real hunting skill, but can afford to hunt in places with tons of game, will make the list.
What about us little guys. There are guys on this board with more hunting skill than those big shots will ever dream of.
Pics of Gatehouse in his loin cloth, spear in hand , stalking the mighty black bear, come to mind. :D

Yeah professional hunters, guides and recreational hunters... they all have different skill sets and some of us here have done all of the above.
I am pretty sure most of the hockey players in the hall of fame are mostly pro's. I don't think we should preclude anyone from membership because they are a professional or a guide. There could be many categorys just like in the record books.
The argument that it would offend people is silly, I believe it would raise awareness and be a huge boost for the sport. How many 12 year old boys would let there Momma drag them past the Hunting Hall Of Fame in Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal???? You should see the tourists in Bass Pro Shop... families of all description and just there to see the mounts and displays!

The event that fogducker is talking about is the annual Big Buck Day in Southern Ontario hosted by the South Central Big Game Association and it is a huge success every year. B&C qualified scorers come and score all the records for the year and the lucky few are enterd in the FROW book for Ontario!
