Hey guys,

I did a search, but couldn't find the answer to my question, so here goes...

I'm planning on heading down to South Dakota this fall for a week long pheasant hunt (woohoo!) and I'm wondering something...

Since I'll have a valid hunting licence, and a proper Form 6NIA from the ATF, can I bring along firearms not related to the hunting?

For instance, can I bring along my USP or 686 for some plinking in the downtime? Do they care if the firearms you bring aren't related to hunting? I'd like to be able to experience shooting a handgun wherever I feel like it, rather than only at a range!

Any advice is appreciated!

The 6NIA is a Federal document and is to be treated as such. It will allow you to bring firearms into the USA but cannot over-ride "state" law regarding firearms. Do your homework on this first and check with the state(s) attorney's offices where you'll be traveling to.

None of the 13 guns on my F6 would gennerally be concidered "hunting" guns.
Furthermore the hunting lic. I submitted to support my F6 app. is from the state of Alaska. I only cross into the US from Ontario to shoot at ranges in New York State and Michigan
I never intend on hunting while in the US and will likely never visit Alaska...
Doesn't seem to matter...

If your 'non-hunting' firearms are listed and approved on your form 6NIA and you have a valid US hunting licence, you are good to go.

are you driving there or flying.if driveing you may need to get a hunting licence from the state where you cross the border at

"...can I bring along firearms not related to..." Ask the place you're going to for the hunt. You should look at the SD hunting regs too. Some States don't allow you to have a handgun while you're hunting birds. Kind of like not being allowed to have a rifle in your possession during bow season. Plus there may be a State law about non-residents having handguns period.
You should look into the firearms possession laws for the States you go through as well.
