Hunting is a coward's pastime!

You've just described what it is like to hunt mule deer. I do it all the time. Shame on me.
 
A coward's past time? I just do it because it's a pile of fun. I don't think it makes someone more of man because they hunt or not. I've held out for bigger animals and I've shot a lot for meat. I enjoy doing it. I hunted with my Dad and now I hunt with my kids. How can that be a coward's past time?
 
I seriously doubt the animals involved appreciate the ethics and fair chase arguments everyone is having here. The end result is usually the same. This isn't about the animals at all, Its about human interaction and people need to judge others , thereby raising themselves above them.
The Safeway hunters don't need to justify their gathering technique any more than the food hunters need to justify theirs to them.
There are pros and cons to trophy hunting as well, and they don't need to justify what they do to anyone either.
neither do the trappers, and neither do the tree stand users and neither do the bear baiters. Look at the black rifle guys vs the same caliber wood stock guys sheesh.
Humans have been killing game as long as there have been humans,they are really , really good at it, they can run it into the ground chasing it for days where it may die from exhaustion or finish it off with a sharp stick or they may out smart it or use the latest technology to have an even more one sided (unfair some may say)hunt (although probably more humane). An easy hunt for a subsistence hunter isn't unethical, its just an easy days work.
This sounds a lot like gun owners trying to justify their hobby to antis who take a higher moral position and make the firearm owner defend themselves , allowing themselves to be put in a position of weakness.
FFS Every hobby I get into and read the forums there is always groups of people holding themselves morally above others within the same group and everyone's running around trying to justify themselves to someone else.

You're right, the animals would probably rather not be killed at all. Fair and unfair, cruel or humane, sporting or unsporting, and even whether we should care whether the animals would rather not be killed are entirely man-made concepts. Since they are made-up in the first place they have to remain a matter of opinion.

I didn't read all of the posts but on this one....it may not be your vision of hunting and may simply be harvesting but it is still more sporting than the cow that is slated to get killed on tuesday, was forced to live in overcrowded conditions and pumped full of antibiotics and got to live a year at best.
Anti's sit around eating their veal and foie gras taking about how cruel and barbaric hunters are.
 
Calling hunters names while you eat meat and refuse to get your hands dirty is a cowardly act. Leather shoes, leather ball glove, beer, perfume, plastic bags, candy, downy, sugar, condoms, nail polish, crayons, cake mixes, orange juice, vitamins, bagels, cigarettes all contain or are made (or were) using animal products or byproducts. These people are morons and pop up from time to time give them 15 minutes and they'll move on to some other "cause"
 
Calling hunters cowards is just a way to be insulting. Fact is, very little hunting involves much danger at all. Bravery or lack of it doesn't apply, so that particular insult is just stupid. Strangley it seems to be a common misconception among non-hunters and anti-hunters. If hunters are in fact trying to prove something, that ain't it. It makes as much sense as saying that gun owners or magnum shooters are compensating for something. What friggin' genius thought that one up? Has there been a study comparing umm, errr, barrel length? Unless they mean that we are compensating for our inability to put holes in anything we can see out to a fair distance, by getting a tool that enables that? Then I suppose its true, but are they insinuating that they have that ability? Doesn't make any sense.
 
Just read all the posts. Lot of conversation on the topic of "trophy hunting". Trophy hunting has two connotations. Fellow hunters realize it is a person who is very selective in pursuit of his preferred prey. In the world of anti-hunting trophy hunters are the most vilified and held up as the worst of the worst. Someone mentioned it should be called "selective hunting". This would be a more accurate depiction of this particular segment of our fellow hunters. As far as judging how someone else hunts, as long as the kill is humane all judgement ends there, period. Bowhunting has always intrigued me but have never pursued it as I worry about not being able to have a 'clean kill'. That is my personal choice. The person who heads out with a bow is secure in the knowledge he can make that humane shot. That is their choice and I can completely support that. Outfits like PETA are extremists in their views and feel their preferred ends justifies the whatever means they choose to employ to gain these ends. Deliberate misinformation is a tool they will employ. They feel their hypocrisy is justified. A very sad self-deluded bunch at the end of the day. I agree with one sentiment posted earlier. When talking of these matters and presenting your hunting point of view stay calm. A straight out pi$$ing contest solves nothing. Sept 10th is fast approaching my friends and I can hardly wait. Most conversations with non-hunters is a fruitless endeavour. I deal with these people in a different manor now. In stead of defended hunters and hunting I put them on the defensive. Ask them questions. What have you done in the last year to for wildlife and their habitat? Are you aware of where money from hunting licences, fish and game associations etc. go? Where do you think your beef, pork and chicken comes from and the methods of harvest? Do you know how decisions are made to decide, how many tags are issued? Are you aware that licenced are issued with an attempt to balance population? Do you believe that animals in the wild will live a full wonderful life without hunters? Do you know how animals in the wild really die? You can add___________ fill in the blank.
Most non-hunters don't have a clue. When you challenge them they'll quickly change the subject.

I've had some luck (OK maybe entertainment) by acting astonished that anyone had a problem with hunting, and had never heard of such a thing, then acting friendly and interested and getting them to explain anti-hunting to me. The thing is, they can't explain it because their position makes no sense.
 
My mom is 70. She just got her hunter number card in the spring. A big part of that was learning from me the reasons why I hunt. The excellent deer, moose, grouse, hares, etc. that I have treated her to certainly helped.

Anyway, she's right into it now. I'm taking her to get her licence and tags today after work and we have a trip planned for the weekend.

She's also into rug hooking, and she's involved with a small group of local women who get together once a week. One of the women has a huge amount of property outside of the city. Lives there all by herself. The property is infested with both mulies and white tails and she complains incessantly about how they eat all the stuff in her gardens. So, my mom politely asked her if she'd like us to take care of her deer problem.

The answer: "Plenty of people have asked, but I'm just going to have to say no. Sorry."

My mom respects the decision, but it leaves me with one question: "Why?" I can only assume she is an anti.

(she eats meat, of course, but probably from animals that weren't killed...???)
