I'm going on a work retreat in late Feb or early March, to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo.

Has anyone hunted around Ixtapa or Mexico in general? If so, what can you tell me about it? Cost? Hassle? I'm assuming I probably need a guide/outfitter lined up? I'm assuming bringing guns into the country has its hoops to jump through? What about borrowing a gun on site? Is that ever an option?

I'm thinking I can't dedicate a lot of time to this - one full day preferably, maybe 2? something like a bird hunt for a day maybe? I'm open to whatever is available though. Even if it's info I can't use this year maybe I can on a future trip, so please tell me everything you know!

I don't have a lot of money, this is probably a pie in the sky sort of idea, but if I'm getting free airfare and a hotel I figure I might as well explore my options! I'm also soliciting fishing info on the fishing/boating subforum, you can post that here too if you want!

Thanks everyone!

Why would anyone go to a communist country or to a third-world hellhole is beyond my understanding.

I've been to mexico on average 2-3 times every year the past 8 years including once to Cuba, people have all been very friendly and helpful. This is not just hanging out at the resort, we spend a lot of time out with the locals. If your not out looking for trouble its the same there as it is here.
I feel safer in Mexico then I do in my hometown if I stray to bad areas.

Don't believe everything you hear with the media

You might be better off fishing to be honest. That's more the norm for coastal towns. Ixtapa is wonderful. Lots of wild areas. Too bad they won't let you hunt the deer on Ixtapa island. Just kidding, as they are something of an attraction. Lots of crocodiles in the rivers and swamps around Ixtapa. Very safe area to visit, Ixtapa / Xuijatenejo (sorry, don't know the spelling).

I've seen some videos where they hunt iguanas in the orchards with air guns. That looks like fun. And you can eat the iguanas afterwards. Or the locals can. Not sure where that was. You'd probably have to know someone.

Hautulco, Ixtapa are not third world hell holes by any means. They are beautiful vibrant cities. Lots of good friendly honest working folks there.

He didn't ask for your input on that topic now did he.

He did not, as I did not ask for yours. But i's a free country (or it's supposed to be), so I don't need anyone's authorization to say anything - nor do you.

With that said, it is not my intention to be confrontational. I speak with the experience of having spent 30 years of my life in such a place. As I was a member of the selected few authorised to carry, I did, and it saved me at least twice. I just find very weird, having been born in a place like that (and having legally immigrated to the land of milk and honey), to see people going the opposite direction, even for a few days.

Stories about innocent North Americans and Europeans being raped, killed, robbed or beaten in tropical paradises are too abundant for me to cite here.

Where did you spend those 30 years?

I also have a thread up about fishing in the fishing sub forum. I expected hunting to be a long shot but figured I'll never know if I don't ask...

Been to Cayo Santa Maria a few times...incredibly nice beaches. It's a ways from the main land and really no hunting opportunities on the islands there that I saw but maybe iguanas. Fishing though seemed quite popular both off shore, in the mangroves and deeper sea. My wife and I went deep sea fishing and the waves were pretty big rollers which caused her to be sea sick the whole time. That left me to fish with the captains helper. I didnt want to have beers alone so I offered him some and I dont think I've seen a bigger smile in a long time. Cuba is a very poor country, and I figure ice cold beer isnt common among the locals considering his reaction. Although we couldn't understand each other, beer and fishing seems to be enjoyed by many haha. One barracuda in the boat. Wife hated it, but aside from her being in misery, it was still a good time.

Did you do any shore fishing? Some DIY fishing is more my style...

The deep sea fishing was a bit pricey ($300ish for 4 hours, with 6 and 8 hour trips as options) but they also had an option for fishing the mangroves for like $100 per person, two to a boat or $180ish for a single person in the boat alone, that interests me more than deep sea fishing...
