Hi guys,

I am still somewhat new to the forum so I would like to introduce myself again here. I am predominantly a collector of WW2 militaria and firearms but I would love to purchase a more modern piece and head outside and do some informal target shooting. What I understand is that I require a hunting license if I want to take a rifle into a field and shoot some targets. Is that correct?

What licensing do I have to do for that? Also is there a good course in Toronto that anybody can recommend?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to your advice.

Adam

as far as I know you don,t need a hunting license to target shoot but if you are somewhere the law may think your hunting you should have a target to show him or her or whatever the case may be.

Welcome to CGN.

In Onterrible you do not need a hunting license to target shoot out in the bush (be it crown land or private property). What you have to be able to do is prove you are target shooting, the onus is on you to prove your innocence, not for them to prove your guilt. I always carry my targets with me when I'm walking back to the car just in case I am stopped by a CO and they accuse me of poaching. I have a hunting license and they can still charge me if they think I'm hunting illegally, so it doesn't matter if you have a license or not provided you can show proof you have been target shooting.

It can't hurt to have your hunting license though, it's another fun aspect of owning firearms and can expand your hobby. You'll have to take the Ontario Hunter Education Course. It's usually a one day course and the test is similar to the written portion of your PAL exam. There is no practical section to the test. I'm a few hours east of you so I'm not sure who offers it in your area.

Thanks very much for the feedback! That would certainly be an ideal situation. I will do some more reading on the matter but if anybody else has any more info it would be appreciated.

Everything is interpretation by a CO.

If your in a sand pit that is used regularly for target practice, they probably wont give you a second look.

If you are "walking around" the bush with your rifle they will probably be very interested.

A great deal also depends what part of ontario you are from as some of the southern municipality have restrictions on the discharge of firearms.

Find something you can hunt all year without any restrictions on calibers. In Quebec it's groundhogs. Don't forget a vest.

Its Foxes, skunks and Coyotes in Southern Ontario as far as small game open all year goes. Pests birds like crows, grackles, starlings, red wing black birds, etc are also fair game all year long.

If you're looking for an instructor for the hunting course in your area, try ohep.net.

Course should be $150 or so including manual and exam.
