Hey guys,

I have a hankering for a few good hunting stories. Can anyone recommend some good hunting literature? Africa, North America, Asia, I don't have any preference. Just a good read is all I'm looking for.

Cheers -Cameron

So many out there but one of my faves is Robert Ruark some great stories in Africa but don't forget "The old man and the boy" - a great great easy read

But check safaripress.com - hundreds of great titles

Gordon MacQuarrie's Stories of the Old Duck Hunter's Trilogy, classic Outdoor writing at it's best. I also like Aldo Leopold's "A Sand County Almanac", and Teddy Roosevelt's "Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail", "Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter" and anything by Gene Hill.

All of Capstick's stuff. I also enjoyed "African Epic The Story of Paul Kambada Grobler" and "The Hunting Imperitave" both by Richard Harland.

I gotta repeat the Capstick, have 2 of his books, both great. Also have Hemmingway's "Green Hills of Africa" and it is a wonderful book as well.

I borrowed "The Man-eaters of Tsavo and other East African Adventures" by John Henry Patterson from a public library once.

For something on the lighter side grab a book or two by Pat McManus.

PM me and I will loan you one of my Capstick books, (My other one is loaned to a friend right now) as I live in Calgary as well.

Theodore & Kermit Rooselvelt - East of the Sun And West of the Moon ( Asia mountain game expedition)
Karras - North to Cree Lake (local trappers story, 1930's)
Hill - Mostly Tailfeathers ( collection of short stories of guns, birds, dogs, other odds & ends)
Kerasote - Blood Ties - (essay on the culture of hunting in 3 parts)
Corbett - Man Eaters of Kumaon ( tigers in India/Nepal)

Corbett - Man Eaters of Kumaon ( tigers in India/Nepal)

X 2

Corbett has some great stories of Tigers and Leopards.

I love to read stuff by the old authors/adventurers. Years....and years ago I had a subscription to Field & Stream and loved to read the editorials and hunting stories. I recall that one of the regular writers lost his son in Vietnam. It still makes my heart ache when I think of that.

Free downloadable MP3's are available for a couple of Teddy Roosevelt's writings are available. The story of Teddy himself is an excellent listen. I'll dig up the website addy's and post them here.:p:p

edit: here's the address for Teddy's story. Just right click on each chapter to save as....

edit: also found a free downloadable book "Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail" by Roosevelt

Some great literature has already been suggested, hansol. But I cannot believe one of the greats has been passed over, thus far................ Patrick McManus.:)

Your dissertation on 'barrel break-in' could almost be a chapter out of a McManus 'collection'.

Hey guys,

I apologize for not replying to this thread sooner. My computer decided to self-destruct on me, so it's taken the last couple days to get it in order.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I'm pretty sure I now have a reading list that will last me for the rest of the year.

Oh, and Pat McManus is one of my favourite authors. I think his article in Outdoor Life is often the only thing worth reading in that rag half the time :p

I thought I had a good reply for you - but everything that I've got has been said. Ruark and Capstick are among my favourites for sure.

A modern one that I highly recommend is Dan Donarski's, "21 Days in Africa". It's very well written and entertaining, at times hilarious, with beautiful photography. There are a few reviews on the Accurate Reloading forum.

You can order most of the ones already mentioned from amazon.ca (click on the pic) and get free shipping if your order is >$39. Trust me, you'll read them all more than once.
