I realise this comes up all the time but I wanted to put it out there and see if anyone has ideas.
I started flying model airplanes 12 years ago. The property our field is on is a rod and gun club. A few members were members of the gun club as well and introduced me to shooting and I loved it. Started shooting more and flying less and I am now 100% shooting. I shoot 20-24s in skeet and have run the trap field a bunch. Rifle also is comfortable out to 200 yards. No one in my extended family even owns firearms or hunts. I have done a few canned pheasant hunts and tried waterfowl on my own a few times with not much success. I even got a lab and hunt trained her using dokkens book. Unfortunately I just don't ever seem to get much luck in the field for her. She is a great girl and always comes along even though its normally just us hanging out. Anyway I am looking for help getting more luck. My kids are a bit older so I have some more time this fall.
2 Problems -
#1 - Mentors. I have 1 mentor who has taken me hunting and he is a great guy but our schedules don't cross much and he doesn't waterfowl or big game hunt mutch (field trials are his focus) I dont really know what I am doing short of watching youtube and reading. I don't have anyone to help me first hand.
#2 - Land. I live in Waterloo area so no crown land at all. Everything seems to be spoken for. No where to hunt at all except a few places with huge pressure.
If anyone has any recommendations on how to get more involved. I have been trying for 6 years now and have got exactly 2 geese, 3 ducks 11 pheasants and a rabbit. I have never seen a deer in the flesh during an open season and most days in the water are me looking at the sky. Im a good enough shot if something comes in I will normally get it but I just cannot seem to get much to come in.
I had an opportunity to visit hunt camp last year but the group I was looking at didn't want to let me join. I was offered to come visit for a day. I went up and helped prep the bush in September. Cut shooting lanes. Hang stands etc but I could not get up on the days offered when the season rolled around.
Any advice would be appreciated.
