Next time you guys out west gripe about the state of moose hunting in your area, consider this ........

Here in NB moose hunting is done on a draw for tags system. MANY people go years with no tags in sight while some folk get lots of tags. I haven't been drawn since 1988. The cost of a moose licence is approx $50 while the cost of applying for the draw is $9. You are allowed to take another hunter as the "second gun" on your licence. His licence is another $50 approx.

The season here is three days on the last full week in Sept. The hunt is on this week. Thursday the weather was clear and HOT mid 20s. Yesterday it rained VERY hard all day. Today (last day) it is clear again, cool, but VERY windy....... So, if you were lucky enough to get a tag here in NB this year, this is what you got for weather and your hunt is over. You can only HOPE to live long enough to get another tag. OR on the other hand if you just HAVE to have some moose meat, you can always buy it from the 1st nations folk who were busy doing their hunting on Monday/Tues/Wed this week in the spot you were going to on Thurs/Fri/Sat.

I saw a fellow going with a calf in the back of a PU yesterday that was about the smallest moose I've ever seen, but when faced with the hunt you are given, you shoot the very 1st one you see, no question!

.

I understand your frustration but after seeing 4 moose Thursday eventually shooting this one Friday morning I can't complain. I'll complain for the next 20 years when I don't get drawn for a tag.

Not musch better here in NS either, 345 tags a year for the province on a draw system, can't reapply after a win for five years. Two one week seasons, (that's a little better I guess)and no hunting on the mainland, only Cape Breton. I think the only way I'll get to hunt moose is to go somewhere else.

Nice moose gastch, congrats :)
You are so right SC. The guys out here have it pretty good but a lot just don't realize it. A few of my friends have moved out here from back east and are astounded by the opportunities available here. Elk, moose, caribou, bear, mule deer, whitetail, sheep, goat, cougar, wolf, small game, waterfowl, upland game etc. And that's just a partial list of general open season game in BC alone. If you add the sub-species and draws available in the three western provinces and the Yukon...a venerable plethora of hunting is available within a few hours drive of my home.
(could be a reason why some of us own so many rifles ;))

Indeed. X2 Nice Moose gastch.

I can gripe about some things here on the rock, but not the moose hunt. 26750 tags issued this year, up 570 over last year. Moose season is 4 months long and if you don't mind a drive you can pretty much get in on a tag annually.

Is there a reason NB won't institute a pool draw?

Wish we had a nuke plant for you over here SC.

My father in law got drawn this year for the first time.He got an old one first morning.10 points on one side, busted stub on the other.Weighed it on the scales at work at 760lbs.

Heard the kill is way down.

There's a fellow here in SJ that cuts moose very fall. I sometimes work for him doing some of the cutting. He called today and told me he has over 20,000lb of moose in his cooler today.

He said the moose this year were alot bigger than in years past. Mostly bulls and bigger ones. He said two came in that were almost 700lbs each on the hook. Head off, hide off, legs off, guts out.

Congratz guys! :D

I'm waiting for Billy the Kid to update with a report. I think this is his 1st tag in 20yrs.

.

Right you are Paul, it was my first tag since 1987. We do have an absolutely crappy system here in NB! Yet the Indians can go whenever they want while guys like you and I wait for years to get drawn. So much for us all being equal Canadians....

On a more positive note, Dad & I did get a little 5 pointer on the 2nd morning in the rain.:D

Try Ontario

If you hunt by yourself you stand a snowballs chance in He-- of getting a bull or even a cow tag in the draw. I have a a camp in area 47, buy a license every year and still no tag. But I'll keep on trying.

Hey, congratulations to the Nasons! Glad to hear you guys got one. It's been a long time coming. Any pictures? What did you shoot it with? Any other hunt details you want to share?:p

Congrats again.

James

Now James, YOU know what I shot it with (caliber) ;):D. And it has been a long time coming for me!

You guys did well to get one on Friday. It puked down rain all day.

So I got to ask ...... Did you beat old Milfred to the draw? :D

.

We did well to get one at all Paul with the lousy weather we had.

And no, Milford didn't beat me to the draw.:D

He's fast, but not that fast!:p

Congrats to the guys who tagged out. Its sad to hear about the sorry state of your Moose draw in NB. As Dangertree said, we don't have too many reasons to complain about our hunt or draw down here on the Rock. Our hunt starts this Saturday. I'm hoping that we don't tag out the first day, so we can enjoy it a little more, especially since we're good until Jan. AFAIK. Either ### license this year, so I'm hoping for a big cow. There's a couple of big bulls kicking around my area, but they're too darn hard to get at and I'm afraid the meat would spoil before we got it all out. Lots of small bulls on the go though, mostly spikes or two-three year olds.
