Hunting near Edmonton (Newb)

This is the year Im going to do it. I've never hunted before, never had anybody in my family do so but I think it's something Id really enjoy. Im just looking to get outdoors with no expectation of getting anything. My buddy who will likely come with is a rookie as well.

Just looking at not spending a bunch of money. Going to grab a .270 for a rifle. Bring a knife. Some water, etc etc. Hopefully a tree stand, 300$ digital camo jackets aren't necessary.

Im having some difficulty navigating all the regulations on the hunting resources. I see that Otter Orlof wildland area allows hunting starting sept for whitetale. Is that a decent place to go? Should I be looking at other locations? No need to give away secret spots.

Just looking for guidance and advice so I finally get into this sport and I can one day pass that onto my children.

Cant comment on the area you mentioned specifically.

Unless you have access toStart making contact with landowners if you wish to hunt close to Edmonton. Otherwise head north or west into Crown land.
 
The first two years I hunted here I drove to some random area that looked good on google maps and then walked around. After a lot of trial and error I have a good area. Scouting is really the key, even if it's during the season.
 
It's too late to scout private and land and get permission so you're limited to crown land, and the closest huntable crown land is about 2.5 hours from Edmonton. Best bet is to get the iHunter app and work with that and google maps to try and find good spots. After that you just need to get out and burn gas, rubber, and boot leather. You've got a good start on that park - it is hunt able - but be sure that the season exists when you want to hunt there. If you're driving that far away there is a lot of crown land. Could be good to check out a lot of spots over a weekend there. Patience and perseverance. Good luck!
 
The closest public land for hunting is well under 2.5 hours away. look up the blackfoot recreation area. They do hunter information seminars (i think the next one is in october), which allow you to hunt in wmu 936. There are also conservation sites at Chip lake west of edmonton that allow hunting, and plenty of public land north east of peers which is all in wmu 348.
 
I've gone out to 511 twice. Very bushy area. No deer seen. Had lots of fun though! I actually found a single Decent spot (which if you would like msg me and I can send to you)

Looking at going to north of Swan Hills this weekend and sometimes in October. So far Ive really been enjoying it despite not seeing a single deer. I enjoy the discovery, being outside, exploring Alberta.

I found a ground blind is a great buy. It'll be an auto include for me and Cabelas has some great deals on them right now.
 
I live about 100km from Edmonton, and I have had no issues getting permission on private land, even during the season. The closer you get to the city, the more difficult it usually is to get permission, and the heavier the hunting pressure. I much prefer to take the time to get permission on private land tban put up with crowds on crown land.

Are the release sites considered un-crowded and private? smh
 
Have a farm in Viking which Ill set up in November. But this early season Im just trying to get my feet wet. Ill see how it goes this weekend!
