Hi everyone,

I've seen some people on the internet doing hunts on bikes but they look a lot like sponsored content rather real description given how much the Atlas bikes are shown (and the gushing over them).
Considering I am not spending 2000$ on a bike does anyone here hunts with regular all terrain or hybrid bikes ? Any advice or big issues you encountered ?

Cheers,
Ninja

Could you not get charged with a loaded firearm on a bike (vehicle)?

Ran into a couple of guys once, going sheep hunting on bikes. They were pulling a couple of those baby prams, loaded with their gear. :)

Grizz

Back when I lived in BC, it was common practice for many logging roads to be shut down to motorized traffic during hunting season. This made it perfect for bicycle access on a regular mountain bike. If we were successful it was just a matter of getting the animal to bike access and cutting into packable portions. Pack frame was then laid from seat to handlebars and secured, makes for an easy stroll out with zero weight on your back. Only thing is keep the brakes clear, get 100lbs of critter on a bike down a good grade can be tough to hold back. This is something I know :)

Used bikes to get into goat country on deactivated roads. Was great getting in on the downhill but a ##### with loaded packs coming out.

Used a rifle scabbard purchased from Cabelas. Zap strapped it to the frame and carrier, good to go. As above used it on deactivated roads and such. Had one bad experience with the bike the first time out and had the gun with sling over my shoulder. Wiped out and not fun, that's when the scabbard came into play. Put it on the side you dismount on and it comes to hand very easily. I also used a kick stand so I did not have to lay the bike down while trying to keep my eye on the bird. Quiet and when going gets too rough just pick it up and carry it.

Used bike a lot in our early yrs , we would take a bunch of equipment and food in by vehicle 2 weeks before they closed the roads
When the season started we carried our packs and rifles on bikes up the mountain s hunting sheep , when we were finished for the yr everything fit into our packs and it is as a fantastic trip out coasting out , scary some times if it rained or snowed but we loved it

I am planning this exact thing this year. It takes me a long time to walk to prime grouse areas, so my plan was a cheap mountain bike with a rack on it, I can cover alot more ground faster and easier than walking.

Cheap mountain bike may have cheap brakes which was part of my bad experience. The brake pads slipped into the spokes and it was a forward tuck and roll on a mountain trail. Good thing I was in my 30's and in hockey shape. Lots of decent used bikes, strongly suggest you look at that.

A mountain bike might be pedal powered, but it can be considered a vehicle. More than one rider has been charged with impaired operation of a vehicle and has lost their driver's licence. It's only a matter of time before a hunter on a pedal bike gets nailed with transporting a loaded firearm in a vehicle. Play it safe and keep the firearm unloaded while transporting.

The mountain bike is an awesome piece of kit for the forestry roads. I have a game cart I picked up from a shop in Keremeos BC. Attaches behind my bike. I also love the bike for small game, riding the same roads in the evenings when the grouse come out to pick gravel.

Be forwarned you over jealous type peddal folk.
Git a blow out with a deer attached on a nice warm day a few miles
frum yer veehickle and wartch yer venison smolder.
Tube kits don't work on fruck'd up kincked rims.

Dint happen to me, but I did rescue a bloke in heavy sweat pack'in out a deer
in too hawt to hunt weather.

A pedal bicycle is not a motor vehicle. No cyclist has been charged of operating while impaired under the Criminal Code.

Operation while impaired

253 (1) Every one commits an offence who operates a motor vehicle or vessel or operates or assists in the operation of an aircraft or of railway equipment or has the care or control of a motor vehicle, vessel, aircraft or railway equipment, whether it is in motion or not,

(a) while the person’s ability to operate the vehicle, vessel, aircraft or railway equipment is impaired by alcohol or a drug; or

(b) having consumed alcohol in such a quantity that the concentration in the person’s blood exceeds eighty milligrams of alcohol in one hundred millilitres of blood.

Section 2 CC

motor vehicle means a vehicle that is drawn, propelled or driven by any means other than muscular power, but does not include railway equipment; (véhicule à moteur)

It's been discussed at length through courts, news, SGI (sask license issuing agency & mandatory state socialism insurer) that a muscle powered bicycle will not get you a DUI/.08... this includes e-bikes IF it has the pedals installed and your legs are actively going round and round. However if the pedals are removable from an e-bike scooter kinda thing and your legs aren't going round and round... you CAN be found guilty. So just don't use anything with a battery or motor assist, pure old fashioned bicycle and you won't be able to be charged with doing anything inappropriate in/on a vehicle.

I've used a mountain bike to access road closures for hunting. In B.C. it is very clearly stated as motor vehicle closures. It worked well for my hunting buddy and I. It's a bit awkward at first but you get the hang of having gear on your back. I would ride with my rifle across my chest.

I just picked it up off Kijiji the other night, $40 for an old Norco mountain bike with V-brakes, it will stop me fine. I do have many more expensive bikes (I do alot of cycling) but they are road bikes. I am going to throw a rack on this beast and it should work good.
