I'm on PEI spending the week here at Cavandish with the family. Deep sea fishing on Wednesday. (fresh mackeral on the Q :D)

I've been here several times before and always thought it was a shame there were no deer here. This place would be absolutely perfect for deer to thrive.

Q?? ..... What's the the grouse hunting like here?

.

When I was there last month my brothers and were saying the same thing. The drive from Charlottetown to Cavendish is nothing but crop fields then woods, crop fields then woods......

I think deer would make out like bandits in summer but P.E.I. is one desolate place in winter. They need thick conifers to yard up in winter and the island doesn't have a lot of those. Didn't see much cedar there either, a whitetail winter favourite food.

Almost no cedar here, some in the west but it only grows as big as a fence post and gets cut. Deer would do well here except for that fact that there are too many roads and cars. Other that that they would flourish.

Grouse hunting is fair, bunnies, same, but Goose hunting is incredible.

They introduced deer to the "island" back in the late 60's (I think it was) --- Farmers didn't like them eating their crops but liked eating the deer --- No survivors.
Cheers, John

Hey SuperCub, where at Cavendish were you? I just got back from there yesterday. I'm on the east coast visiting my parents for two weeks.

total hijack but....

That Savage VLP is working great. Hard to work up a lot as it keeps bugholing so I really can't tell which load is better :)

Definitely one of the better rifles that 'got away'.

Enjoy your holiday

We are staying at Abby Lane cottages. It's a little off the beaten path towards Stanley Bridge on Simpson Mills Road. Very nice.

My consolation for selling this good rifle will be using the funds toward two weeks in the Yukon come this Sept. accompanied by my oldest daughter. :dancingbanana:

Pics to follow. ;)

While out on my power walk this morn. down some single lane back roads, I got to talking to a farmer who owned a bunch of land close by. He said there was usually a fair amount of grouse in the area, but it didn't sound like there were a lot of fellows hunting them. I found lot of apple trees in the old fence rows/thickets. Pretty good grouse habitat.

Deep sea fishing, pop a few gravol and many beers, always works for me.

Grouse was good 25 years ago, hasn't been good anywhere around my area since.

two weeks in the Yukon come this Sept.

:p looks like I may beat you there :owned:

Grouse seem down, they could do a good pheasant stocking here, but dont. So yeah, geese and fish, or fish and geese. Coyotes seem up from what the guys at work are saying.

Actually they have been stocking wild pheasants from NS and NB for the last 3 or 4 years. Grouse are in fact at the low end of their cycle right now, but even at the high end, it is nothing like grouse hunting in NB.

Was stationed in Summerside twice for total of seven years. I left there in 1982. Many fond memories of the place. The duck and goose hunting was really good even if you could not get permission to hunt on private land. Lots of salt marshes with good hunting. There are also alot of rabbits on the island that are lots of fun. There are also grouse and woodcock. There was a large phesant preserve on the island that was really nice to hunt. My wife and I plan a trip down memory lane in the next year or two. Cheers Roscoe

We went deep sea fishing last night instead of Wed. Sailed out of N. Rustico. It wasn't a bad deal at all. $40 ea. for a "three hour tour". We had a blast!! The whole family loved it. Caught a bunch of mackerel and a good deal of cod. Saw a whale and seals. The mackerel ended up as breakfast this morning off the BBQ and the cod will be supper. :p

Too bad there aren't more grouse here. This would be a beautiful spot for upland hunting in the fall.

On another note, I noticed that several drivers seemed to swerve towards me when they see my Toronto Maple Leafs shirt.

Prolley vote Liberal here too. ;)

My great-uncles ran a deep sea fishing operation (and any other kind of fishing as well0 out of North Rustico for many, many years. My family has been there since the 1840s. To me, the only thing I enjoy as much as hunting is going out on a morning sail, handlining a few dozen mackerel (to the amazement of a bunch of inept tourists ;) ) and then frying them up in the cottage with some french fries or new potatoes, some fresh greens, and root beer from a glass bottle. Some of my best memories growing up are fishing trips and family vacations down there. . . .

But about hunting on PEI. I've never done it - I started hunting when I moved to NB - but waterfowl and rabbits are pretty much it. I have seen very few grouse on PEI growing up, but tons of geese (coulda shot them out of my yard). If I was to move back I think I'd do a lot of coyote hunting, and maybe even try raccoon hunting, just to do something different.

One of the problems with PEI is that their seasons are so dang short. There's no spring or summer seasons for anything except crows and pigeons (although I guess that could work out all right :D). If I moved back home I think I'd have to find an NB outfitter to take me bear hunting in spring. If there were still bears on PEI, well, THAT would be fun - but they will never be re-introduced, you can bet on that.

BTW, according to my university biology teacher, there were never deer native on PEI - just caribou, and maybe the odd moose who floated over. With the mega-farming so prevalent on PEI, they'll never re-introduce those species, that's for sure . . .

Caribou? Sure he isn't confusing PEI with NFLD?
Everything I've read said bear, deer, and wolves were here. Never heard caribou.

What we need here is turkeys.
