I got a week off of work at the end of this month to go on my first ever bear hunt. This will be a self guided learning week as I have no one to learn from.
What size of a hunting pack would you guys recommend for packing out a black bear?

That sounds perfect. I don't mind a couple trips. I am not going for no trophy. I would be real happy with a 200lber

Depends on your budget and your size. My first bear was carried out in a mec 60l recreation barrel backpack. I believe the whole set up was about $90. The bear was around 250pounds.

Cheers,

Then check out mec.ca or our site sponsors. The bag won't win you any guchi gear contests but it works and can be used for camping and canuing.

Cheers,

lol Gucci gear. They can keep that crap.
If the mec can hold a good amount of weight I'm in.

MEC gear can usually carry a lot, and they have one of the best return policies out there. They came out with a new pack with better features? you can bring the old one in and exchange it. I have the MEC IBEX and I have carried over 100lb inside the bag. Gear tho not meat

I use a bull-pac
I love it. It's just a frame, so you can add whatever type of bag you like.

Use it just to haul meat, or slap on a few dry bags, or a bucket.

Without being specific to type make sure the belt strap is skookum. If you can get a good fit on your hips the load will go easier.

No internal frame, anywhere, will out-pack a frame pack. Read some of the articles on Eberlestock's page and you'll see Glen Eberle talk about using his pack to make the first trip then going back in with a frame pack. Frames can be had anywhere from $100 for a plain jane job from Cabela's to $500 or more for a Mystery Ranch NICE frame.

I use the camp trails moose pack...great for multi day trips and as a pack out ruck. Frame is rated for 200 lbs. I picked it up used at a yard sale for $10.

The old Trapper Nelson Indian pack was the best I really miss that pack board
I would pack Argalite (carving stone) out of the mountain with my Trapper Nelson I have used more modern packs but none of them Comes close To the my old wooden pack board
I have a Katanka I take the bag off and just use the external frame for packing game
