Should have been a multiple choice poll.

I use a variable scope for ranges longer then 200 yards.
Change open sights on my rifles to Peep/aperture when I can.
And use a red dot on brush rifles, and shotguns (with back up sights in case of battery failure).

Typical of many polls, the way it is worded changes everything. This is a very misleading poll, when there are no conditions mentioned.

I use a peep on smoke poll. First year I had it I missed 9 deer( couldn't hit a thing). I practiced more now I prfer it over my open sight smokepole. Rifle a fixed 4 for deer. Walking through bush I use model 94 with open sights.

I should have said ''big game hunting within 100 yards'',but then again, about 95% of all larger game I have killed is well under that-probably 60 yards is closer to my average shot in over 60 deer several black bears, and a moose.

i generally make a distinction between 'ghost rings' and 'peep sights'. while technically 'peep sights', ghost rings perform much different than a .050" aperture sight.
most of my hunting rifles are scoped but if i had a choice (drilling, tapping, buying ghost rings, dovetailing, matching sights, etc is more cost and time prohibitive than simply scoping it) i would be happy with ghost-ring style sights on all of them except my varmint rifles.

that said i chose 'peep' simply because there was no ghost ring option.

good point-and that is what I meant-a hunting type[Ghost ring] peep sight.I've just purchased a 9.3x57 Husqvarna equiped with Hellqvist ghost ring type peep sight from Tradex and am quite anxious to actually try it out

Even under 50 I was missing. I was getting frustrated that year. One good thing I did lots of shooting and could still hunt some more.

Even out here in the prairies, 125yds is the avg. shot, you can average further shots if you only hunt open areas, it depends on your hunting style/terrain. Anyhow I use peep sites or open sites on all my big bore hunting rifles from .50 cal. Sharps down to the .45s. I only use scopes on smaller rifles for target work or bullet accuracy testing, but not for anything serious.

Peeps are nice in open country, but are difficult to use in thick bush. A ghost ring works better in low light and thick bush. If you do not have a ghost ring, unscrew the peep insert and use it without the insert.

well,I certainly found replacing the front sight with a ''fire sight'' makes for a deadly combination with a large aperture or ghost ring rear sight .I was having trouble with the front sight being a blur with the regular blade sight

Not a bad idea for a poll, but it needs to be changed.

The biggest thing is hunting condition. It depends where I am hunting.

If I am hunting a field, I'd choose a scope. If not, I'd prefer a peep/ghost ring site.

Nothing wrong with open sites, I just find them dated technology.
