I believe rabbit is covered under a small game license in Ontario, but in the Hunt 2007 Manual it says that you have to contact your local township or something like that for rabbit hunting regulations.

Can anyone tell me if I can use a .22lr to hunt rabbit anywhere in or near Niagara? ie. Vineland, Smithville, etc....

Yes, I am going to check when I go get my temp outdoors card this week, but I am getting impatient and thought I would ask in advance.... lol :D

Thanks

Some areas you have to pay the town itself for a hunting permit on top of your hunting license. Call the MNR and they will give you contact information if the area you want to hunt requires it. I'm pretty sure you have to go to a local Service Ontario in that area for a township permit.

Ah yes, municipal firearms discharge by-laws and municpal hunting licenses; topics that are dear to my heart

Most, if not all, municpal firearms discharge by-laws in Niagara prohibit .22's and centre-fire rifles. Remember, municipal by-laws are allowed to be more restrictive than the Provincial hunting regs. I have heard that Thorold allows .22's, but I am not certain on this because I do not hunt in Thorold. Haldimand County (Dunnville area) does allow .22's. The rest of Niagara is shotgun only.

In regard to municpal hunting licenses (a.k.a. township licenses), these are a relic of the past that, unfortunately still exist in most Niagara municpalities. They are required if you want to hunt rabbit or pheasant. The rabbit potion is silly and the pheasant portion is a joke because there has not been a huntable population of pheasants anywhere in Niagara for a generation.

The Town of Lincoln officially repealled its license by-law a few years ago, so you do NOT need a township license in Lincoln. The City of Niagara Falls technically requires you to buy a township license, but I have an e-mail from the City Clerk telling me that I can ignore the by-law:eek: (I carry a copy of the that e-mail with me when I hunt in Niagara Falls. All other Niagara municpalities (including West Lincoln, Wainfleet, Pt. Colborne, Ft. Erie), as well as Haldimand County require you to buy a township license.

I used to take an afternoon off work every fall to drive around to all the various municpal offices to buy my township licenses.

Some of us have been lobbying for the last 7 years to eliminate or revise the municipal license program in southern Ontario and we have made progress. If you dislike township licenses, send me a PM:)

So you do NOT needa township license in Lincoln then? What does Lincoln (not west lincoln) include? Is Vineland included?

Correct. You do NOT need a Township Lincense in Lincoln to hunt rabbits (and pheasants if you spot the rare one). All you need is your Provincial Small Game License. Lincoln consists of Beamsville, Vineland, Campden, Jordan, Jordan Station, Tintern & Rockway. There is no public hunting land in Lincoln, so you will need to seek permission if you do not already have a spot.

There are some "no discharge" zones around the built-up areas.

"...you will need to seek permission..." In writing.

Since when?! The MNR Landowner Consent for only applies to:

"Hunters wishing to hunt deer on private land on Barrie Island, Cockburn Island and Manitoulin Island (WMU 43A, 43B and 44), or moose on private land in WMU 65, are required to carry an MNR Landowner Consent form signed by the landowner."

A yes, township licenses.

Never bought one. It seems their by-law enforcement agents can make more money other places. So they seldom to checks unless they get complaints.
At least thats my experience
