Hunting rifles # of shots/accuracy issues.

When working up a group, I shoot 5 shot groups with 1min between shots on heavy barrels and at least 2min with sporter barrels. After a load is decided on I'll shoot faster to see the effects. My .270 consistently puts its 4th and 5th shots about an inch high and right if I shoot all 5 under a minute.

Often when people think their groups are opening up because of heat its simply because 5 shot groups are bigger than 3 shot. That tends to happen when you look at the whole group instead of half of it. Ten shot groups don't seem to grow much from the fives so five must be enough. Three shots (half of enough) gives mixed results. The worst 3 shot groups are likely a better indication of what a load does than the best.

There might be something deep within the human mind that searches for patterns it finds favorable. Don't like the 5 shot or 10 shot results? Pick a three that you do like. Two shots closer together? Declare to the world, the range and the internet that that is the "real group" and the third is a flier, pulled shot, wind error or the natural result of wearing the wrong colour socks.

You can throw three dead cats in the air and when they land two will inevitably be closer together. Do it with 5 and there will almost certainly for a tight three cat cluster in the pattern. It doesn't necessarily mean anything.
